==Shows with multiple posters==
 +
I'm sorting through my big ol' pile of miscellaneous TMBG stuff  I need to sort through and came across a show poster, but the show already has a different poster uploaded. I'm sure there must be some way to include both but I'm not sure how that works with the template. It's actually an early show/late show situation so I suppose one poster could be linked to the early and one to the late, but neither of them are actually specific to either. If it matters I will also add that the one I have is a smaller flier sort of thing, and I vaguely remember some discussion at some point about posters vs. fliers vs. small listings in newspapers, but I don't recall what if any conclusions were ever reached. --[[User:Selfcallednowhere|Self Called Nowhere]] ([[User talk:Selfcallednowhere|talk]]) 04:34, 19 June 2023 (EDT)

I’m having problems with uploading new versions of files. I tried to upload a new version of TMBGApp2.png and it just uploaded a stretched-out version of the same image.

Hold on, is Linnell a photographer? I always assumed that there were two people named John Linnell, one an awesome very-talented songwriter, and the other a photographer, but now I'm starting to think they're the same guy. People are happy! And thus, '''Dial-A-Wiki''' (at '''(505) TMBW-505''') is born. The unfortunate limitation with its current form is a 60-second length limit on the recordings, but perhaps this is for the better in order to uphold the legal principle of fair use, since the end result comes out as a low-quality (and time-limited) sample.<br />
+
:TMBG Linnell is an outspoken camera enthusiast and enjoys taking photos, but I don't think there's any famous photographer named John Linnell. There is an 18th century painter with the same name. -{{User:CapitalQ/Sig}} 21:49, 6 July 2022 (EDT)
By the way, YES, you can leave voicemail messages. And I'll try to update the song daily for as long as I can. in 2004, an audiobook named "[https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/100349/men-and-cartoons-by-jonathan-lethem/ Men and Cartoons]" was published, a collection of short stories, with one being by john linnell. "The Dystopianist, Thinking of His Rival, is Interrupted by a Knock at the Door" is 22 minutes of john linnell narrating his own original short story (with the first 1:30 having music). it is also available on [http://www.museumofidiots.com/tmbg/mp3s/dystopianist.mp3 museumofidiots.com]. there is hardly any information about it online anywhere, or any transcription. i think a page on TMBW would be a good place for it, but i want to verify first: would such a page be deleted for not actually being music (at least, past the first 1:30)? --[[User:Ncrecc|Ncrecc]] ([[User talk:Ncrecc|talk]]) 09:34, 4 August 2022 (EDT)

on further inspection, it seems that the story actually originates from the print version of men and cartoons, written solely by johnathan lethem, and john linnell's only involvement was narrating the audiobook version. i should probably have deduced that (it is an easy deduction to make) before transcribing the audio... good way to spend half of an hour. --[[User:Ncrecc|Ncrecc]] ([[User talk:Ncrecc|talk]]) 12:48, 4 August 2022 (EDT)

I think it might be good if we delete "User talk:" pages for users that are blocked after we block 'em. Or send a bot to do that. {{User:Buzzmusic100/sig}}
+
When TMBW moved to HTTPS in January, it broke a couple of features including the ability to add/remove albums from Collections and mark yourself as attending future Shows. I put in a few rigs to get these working again today, and we can remove my inline JS mess when [[User:Duke33|Brad]] makes the appropriate tweaks. (I cannot similarly fix Song Ratings, sorry.) -{{User:CapitalQ/Sig}} 18:25, 12 August 2022 (EDT)
:Since users aren't blocked for consistent reasons, I don't know if a bot function would be advisable. It's possible that even a user with a legitimate, active(?) talk page could be blocked, and/or the talk page could be related the the user's blocking (and therefore potentially archival). You could always just request the deletion of a specific page, though. An admin would get around to it soon enough unless it doesn't actually need deletion. What talk page did you have in mind? -[[User:Apollo|Apollo]] 20:56, 22 August 2010 (UTC)
+
::I had [[User_talk:EmmaWatson0|this one]] in mind but there are surely a million (not literally) others. That's why I thought a bot could do it. {{User:Buzzmusic100/sig}}
+
:::Oh, yeah, that might as well be deleted. I'm still not sure about the bot; I think it's too inconsistent (but perhaps I am wrong). Also I think it still seems a little frivolous, seeing as users that require blocking only come along every so often, and I dunno if there are very many talk pages along with them. Not to mention that manual deletion probably isn't very hard. WAS THAT A JOHN HODGMAN REFERENCE? :D -[[User:Apollo|Apollo]] 21:39, 22 August 2010 (UTC)

:To be honest, it couldn't hurt to have a little "today's dial-a-wiki song" box somewhere, but I think it's a little tedious and unnecessary. == Life Is Good webcast ==

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but it does not look like the TMBG portion of the Life is Good Festival will be webcast.
+
:Flansburgh hinted on a KMSU interview last year (on Nov 19, 2021) that a vinyl compilation of Elektra B-sides and remixes is potentially in the works. No talk of it since then, but he also announced Mink Car on vinyl was coming on that interview and it did shortly after. To my understanding, TMBG has the rights to rerelease their Elektra material including the out-of-print '90s EPs but hasn't gotten to it yet. -{{User:CapitalQ/Sig}} 16:55, 16 September 2022 (EDT)

According to the information on the Life is Good website, they are only webcasting the two adult stages. TMBG are performing on the family stage. There is a schedule on the website of the times all the bands who will be appearing on the webcast and TMBG is not on it. You can check out the list of performers who will be on the webcast [http://www.lifeisgood.com/festivals/festival-news.aspx here].

You'll have to wade through a considerable amount of Linnell gushing (obviously) so I apologize if that's not your thing, and I am making a ton of posts (I actually just now made my 200th post after having the thing for 12 days) but hopefully you'll find some things to enjoy in there. So yeh, if you are so inclined you can [http://selfcallednowhere.tumblr.com/ check it totally out right here.]

There's a formatting problem with show pages where the venue has an ampersand in its name. Check out [[Shows/2008-03-08|this show]] at Hal & Mal's in Jackson, MS, or as it renders on the page, "Hal &amp;#38; Mal's." Clicking through on the venue from the show page goes to a broken link, since the URL only gets the "Hal" bit. I tried changing the ampersand to &amp;amp; on the 2008 page, but that makes it worse, turning the venue on the show page into "Hal &amp;#38;amp&amp;#59; Mal's." Yikes! This is also an issue for 4th & B in San Diego, e.g. [[Shows/1999-09-24|here]]. --[[User:Octoflange|Octoflange]] ([[User talk:Octoflange|talk]]) 01:54, 2 March 2023 (EST)

::Their songs are mostly all just a dialogue between John and John, Flans wanting to explore the infinite potential of the accordion, Linnell wanting to become a rock band. There was a huge event between them (Broke in Two), I'm impressed basically remedied the situation but Flans referenced it in The Shadow Government as well which spurred Linnell to write Contrecoup.
+
::I'll break a song down: Wearing a raincoat.
+
::Wearing a raincoat is Flans and his seemingly crazy reason to keep the accordion going in the proportionally small fanbase.
+
::Linnell panicked over the revenue because of their image with the accordion, literally he had to be "talked down" by the rest of the band in some situation. That's the situation being referenced. He wants to make money, live in luxury. Hating food that comes from a pipe is Linnell being tired of eating canned food because of monetary constraints.
+
::Climbing the Walls is about TMBG's boost in popularity with the new image, climbing music charts, making money.
+
:::First of all, I think you might have Linnell and Flans confused, because the accordion is the instrument that Linnell plays. Also, I don't really think that they would base a whole album off of a minor argument like that. I think both Linnell and Flansburgh appreciate and enjoy the accordion very much, and are mature enough that they know that writing songs about it won't solve any issues. And they aren't so poor that they can only eat canned food. John and John are actually both very financially stable. Aside from that, you're a bit off on the chronology. Wearing a Raincoat was written awhile before the release of The Else, and Contrecoup almost surely preceded The Shadow Government. I also think it's worth noting that there is no "new image". TMBG still uses an accordion frequently live, and probably will on the new album, too. There hasn't really been any significant increase in chart-climbing, either. -[[User:Apollo|Apollo]] ([[User talk:Apollo|Phoebus!]]) 03:58, 13 December 2010 (UTC)

::::You're may be right, now that I think about it, it is also about dumbing down the lyrics to the songs. Making the music more accessible.
+

Your interpretation is certainly amusing and I personally appreciate your creativity. I apologise if I came of as hostile in my replies at any point, though. -[[User:Apollo|Apollo]] ([[User talk:Apollo|Phoebus!]]) 05:10, 13 December 2010 (UTC)
+
::::<i>I think you might have Linnell and Flans confused, because the accordion is the instrument that Linnell plays.</i> I think the more significant confusion is the idea that Flans would want to be more involved with exploring the musical form and Linnell would be more concerned about "rock band" status. p.s. <i>23. “You’ll Miss Me,” They Might Be Giants, Lincoln</i>
+

+
For those who believe They Might Be Giants died the moment the duo started working with a live band, 1988’s Lincoln will always stand as the group’s unassailable masterpiece—or almost unassailable. Its Achilles heel, sandwiched between the larkish “Santa’s Beard” and the classic “They’ll Need a Crane,” is the car-crash melange of “You’ll Miss Me.” Over faux-funky jazz bass and discordant horns, John Flansburgh gruffly mock-raps a tough-guy screed, the irritation of his affected vocals doubled by the distortion in which they’re slathered. For a band who’ve always lived by their wits, “You’ll Miss Me” is bafflingly witless; anyone waiting for a sign that it’s some obscure joke ends up waiting in vain.

== TMBG Awareness Day ==
+

+
So Flansburgh has declared Tuesday to be TMBG Awareness Day ([http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WUt0F-3CY0w see this YouTube video] and the @tmbg Twitter feed) to celebrate the release of the preview. I think it would be rather awesome if we, the fan community could make this kind of a big thing. His celebration suggestions included posting a status update, making a video and generally telling all your friends. We seem to be a pretty creative group of people so I am sure we can come up with some other awesome ideas. I took the liberty of creating a Facebook event for the occasion to help spread the word. [http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=124599457617441 Here is the page]. I think you have to be logged in to Facebook to see it but I think anyone can "attend" as long as you have Facebook (let me know if I'm wrong about that). Anybody else got any nifty celebration ideas? Who's with me?! --[[User:BlueCanary|BlueCanary]] 20:57, 22 April 2011 (UTC)

:Not that this isn't swell and all, but I feel like TMBG have forgotten what humility is lately. Maybe I'm just a curmudgeon these days, and maybe it's just because it seems Flansburgh is the one trying to get people interested and also interest people into getting others interested; the Street Team of times past seemed to be done by.... someone else. Also, the fact that JF seems to be a professional twitter artist these days?  Weird. End rant. ~ [[user:magbatz|magbatz]] 21:16, 22 April 2011 (UTC)

::There is a difference between humility and marketing. TMBG are themselves a product they have to sell to survive. They aren't on a major label with the giant advertising budget that comes with it. They've got to do it themselves. And the best resource they have is us, the fans. Fact is if one of the fans tried to organize this, it would get a mild response and maybe sell a few extra copies of the preview. But if the band promotes it, it instantly goes out to 175,000 people on Facebook and 16,000 people on Twitter and if even half those people manage to convince 1 extra person to buy the preview or even just look up the band then it's an overwhelming success. This is just Street Team for the internet age. And besides, it's fun. I don't know about anyone else, but I embrace any opportunity to share my TMBG love with the world. Also, I have found JF's Twitter persona enormously entertaining and informative. *stepping off shoebox now* --[[User:BlueCanary|BlueCanary]] 22:04, 22 April 2011 (UTC)

Having just heard [[Havalina]] on [[Podcast 45]], I find it to be a brilliant cover. I'm especially delighted by the use of melodica on the track. The melodica, with its extraordinary appearance and distinctive sound, seems like a very Johns-style instrument to me; sadly, I don't believe They used it very often. I remember a melodica being played on [[Snowball In Hell]] and [[Istanbul]], but I can't recall any other instance of melodica appearing in a TMBG song. I bought the Join Us EP on iTunes back when it was the full price of $9.99. I don't see any way to get the rest of the album besides re-buying it, and I've emailed Apple multiple times and only got back that they are "denying my request for a refund" (which I wasn't, I was requesting the album I had rightfully purchased). Anybody else who bought the EP have more luck than I have?

According to (I assume) Flansy, the people who bought the EP when it was $3.99 should be able to buy the rest of the album for $6 now on the "Complete My Album" page. :::::::Sounds like this whole "Complete my Album" gimmick was kind of a bust for the Johns. I know it's not their fault, but they definitely spent a lot of energy promoting the EP with the angle that you'd get the full album at a discount. And folks had to wait 2 days to hear the album when the whole point was instant gratification? The static at the end of the FLAC files is a problem too. Unfortunately this all falls into the category of "poor user experience".

==Dan Miller collaborates with William Shatner on new Shatner album==
 +
I don't have time to research the details at the moment, but I'm not seeing any mention of it here, so I wanted to give everyone a heads up that, according to the album's Bandcamp page (click on "Purchase Info" in the app), as well as William Shatner's recent interview with Adam Corolla, Shatner's new children's album, Where Will the Animals Sleep?, was "created in collaboration with longtime guitarist for They Might Be Giants, Dan Miller." The album doesn't have a Discogs page yet, but I hear Dan on backing vocals, and I assume he plays some guitar, at the very least, as well. The Bandcamp page has some images of the CD booklet, so you may be able to see more details there, though most of it was too small for me to make out on my phone. Before The Spine came out, TMBW hosted a Dial-A-Song song or a demo titled "When The Skeleton Walks In The Moonlit Night", which was a mistitled version of Skullivan. It was a really good track! == Proposing massive overhaul to 1983-1985 demo titles ==

== October Surprise ==
+
Hi TMBW, I'm proposing a big change to remove the numbers and years off of various demo titles (eg. 1985 Demo, Demo 1, Demo 2) and replace them with more descriptive titles, such as "[[It's Not My Birthday (Lincoln Demo)]]" or "[[Finished With Lies (Nicolo Demo)]]". This mostly applies to TMBG's demos recorded between 1983 to 1985 that appeared on their demo tapes and will hopefully make the chronology tabs for these demos less messy, as well as fit with the overall theme of the rest of the demo pages, seeing as there's no "[[Snowball In Hell (Demo)|Snowball In Hell (1986 Demo)]]", "[[On The Drag (Demo)|On The Drag (1996 Demo)]]" or "[[She's Actual Size (Demo 1)|She's Actual Size (1991 Demo 1)]]".

I typed up some potential titles for these pages to be moved to, as well as the merging of some of the promotional demos, similarly to how "[[I'm Def]]" has two 1985 mixes but has only one page:<br>

So I'm kind of fascinated by tracking what keys songs are played in live vs. on the studio versions, and was thinking maybe it would be interesting to have a page categorizing the songs that are played in different keys for whatever reason. (Theoretically demo versions and stuff could be included in the list too, but since a lot of the old Dial-A-Song tapes have that chipmunky vocal effect going on, indicating that the tape is being played at the wrong speed, then those songs that have obviously been sped up to a different key by outside technical factors could be left off the list.)

:it's funny that you propose this because the page titles were in fact originally more in line with that. the reason we switched is as we learned more about different tapes over the years the more cumbersome the descriptive names became. pages would have to be moved with every discovery. what's more, with the explosion of tapes we've learned about in the past 5 years or so, the band's lack of intentionality with these releases has become starkly apparent, which imo makes giving certain descriptive names rather arbitrary. e.g. we used to have a page <nowiki>[[You'll Miss Me (Flexi-Disc Version)]]</nowiki>; since then we've discovered that it also appears on two tapes, at least one of which probably(?) predates the flexi — thus tagging it with flexi/wiggle/whatever feels wrong. likewise, tacking "promotional" onto page titles that are already quite lengthy seems like unnecessary baggage.

:I do agree that the current system does have its flaws. It can require assuming the year and chronology of demos (though these details are still required elsewhere on the infoboxes and chronology pages, so assumptions still have to made with some demos regardless). Theres multiple tracks titled "1985 Demo" that were actually recorded in 1984. I however do not know about this proposed system. I'm fine with them being named after how the demos were recorded or what they recorded for, but I dont think pages should be named for what they ended up being released through when thats not what they were recorded for. I know that there's already that category for song keys (e.g. Songs in E major) that appears at the bottom on song pages, but I thought this might be a little better organized for viewing things on a song-by-song basis, since as it is now, a bunch of songs have incorrect keys listed, or have a whole bunch of keys on their page, which kind of confuses things. I'm not suggesting getting rid of that, I just think having a page listing the songs that have notably been played in different keys in different situations would be interesting, and would like to know whether anyone else thinks it's a good or bad idea. -[[User:J-Gatz|J-Gatz]]

Shows with multiple posters[edit]

--Self Called Nowhere (talk) 04:34, 19 June 2023 (EDT)

Proposing massive overhaul to 1983-1985 demo titles[edit]

Hi TMBW, I'm proposing a big change to remove the numbers and years off of various demo titles (eg. 1985 Demo, Demo 1, Demo 2) and replace them with more descriptive titles, such as "It's Not My Birthday (Lincoln Demo)" or "Finished With Lies (Nicolo Demo)". This mostly applies to TMBG's demos recorded between 1983 to 1985 that appeared on their demo tapes and will hopefully make the chronology tabs for these demos less messy, as well as fit with the overall theme of the rest of the demo pages, seeing as there's no "Snowball In Hell (1986 Demo)", "On The Drag (1996 Demo)" or "She's Actual Size (1991 Demo 1)". I typed up some potential titles for these pages to be moved to, as well as the merging of some of the promotional demos, similarly to how "I'm Def" has two 1985 mixes but has only one page:

Put Your Hand Inside The Puppet Head (Demo 1) → Put Your Hand Inside The Puppet Head (Butler Demo?) (Bill Krauss Demo?) (Handclap Demo?) (DMX Demo?) (Promotional Demo?)
Put Your Hand Inside The Puppet Head (Demo 2) → Put Your Hand Inside The Puppet Head (Promotional Demo)
Put Your Hand Inside The Puppet Head (Demo 3) → Put Your Hand Inside The Puppet Head (Demo)

Number Three (1984 Demo) → Number Three (Demo)
(Merge 1985 Demo into the album page since it’s a different mix of the same recording)

Don't Let's Start (1985 Demo) → Don’t Let’s Start (Demo)

You'll Miss Me (Demo 1) → You’ll Miss Me (Flexi Demo)

Youth Culture Killed My Dog (1985 Demo) → Youth Culture Killed My Dog (Demo)
Youth Culture Killed My Dog (1985 Promotional Demo) → Youth Culture Killed My Dog (Sampler Demo)
[since promo tape #2 is also titled “TMBG Album Sampler”, it could also be merged into the 1985 demo tape version since it’s a different mix with extra overdubs]

(She Was A) Hotel Detective (1985 Demo) → (She Was A) Hotel Detective (Demo)

Hell Hotel (1983 Demo) → Hell Hotel (Original Demo) [since it appeared on the band's original demo]
Hell Hotel (1984 Demo) → Hell Hotel (Demo)

Nothing's Going To Change My Clothes → Nothing’s Gonna Change My Clothes (Demo)
[the promo version could be merged into this page into this page since it’s the same recording but a different mix]

They Might Be Giants (1984 Demo) → They Might Be Giants (Promotional Demo?) (Original Demo?)
They Might Be Giants (1985 Demo) → They Might Be Giants (Demo)
[Could also merge these two together since it’s the same recording but different mixes]

Everything Right Is Wrong (1984 Demo) → Everything Right Is Wrong Again (Demo?) (Promotional Demo?)
Everything Right Is Wrong → Everything Right Is Wrong Again (Demo?) (Flexi Demo?)

I'm hoping to get some opinions on this change and whether or not it'll be more beneficial for site readers, as the original page titles have stood untouched for years on this site. Thank you. − Mrsomebodyelse (talk) 01:53, 20 September 2024 (EDT)

it's funny that you propose this because the page titles were in fact originally more in line with that. the reason we switched is as we learned more about different tapes over the years the more cumbersome the descriptive names became. pages would have to be moved with every discovery. what's more, with the explosion of tapes we've learned about in the past 5 years or so, the band's lack of intentionality with these releases has become starkly apparent, which imo makes giving certain descriptive names rather arbitrary. e.g. we used to have a page [[You'll Miss Me (Flexi-Disc Version)]]; since then we've discovered that it also appears on two tapes, at least one of which probably(?) predates the flexi — thus tagging it with flexi/wiggle/whatever feels wrong. likewise, tacking "promotional" onto page titles that are already quite lengthy seems like unnecessary baggage.
i do strongly feel that the current system of years and/or numbers is the way to go. that said, i think there is definitely room for improvement within the system, but it should be dealt with a case by case basis. (for example i can see the argument for the two clothes demos being merged. but then what makes an edition of a song page-worthy? edits? mixes? that feels like an entirely different, very exhausting discussion with no clear answer). —ant 03:04, 20 September 2024 (EDT)
I do agree that the current system does have its flaws. There's already pages like this on the wiki, such as Hell Hotel (Podcast Demo), Youth Culture Killed My Dog (Bill Krauss Demo), Don't Let's Start (WFMU Demo), and On The Drag (IFC Demo), which were obviously not made for the podcast, Bill Krauss Demos, WFMU, and IFC respectively.
