Cancelled shows[edit]
- In an interview with Gary Ray for SAY Magazine in 1986, the band mentioned that they were booked to play at the Peppermint Lounge[1], but the venue closed in October 1985[2] before they were able to play.
Unknown dates[edit]
- In the Gigantic documentary, Joe Franklin recalled seeing They Might Be Giants open for singer Stan Edwards[3] sometime before their first appearance on the Joe Franklin Show[4]:
I was invited to a Greenwich Village night club many years ago to see a friend of mine on the bill named Stan Edwards, the man who sang "A Tribute To Bobby Darin"[5]. It said on the program; preceding Stan Edwards was a group called They Might Be Giants. I thought to myself "who could be bold — so presumptuous as to call themselves Giants?" And I figured "I got to sit through that and suffer through that..." But when they came on, it was electric.
- Although not a club in the Greenwich Village, the band may have opened for Stan Edwards at Gregory's, a local jazz club on 63rd Street and 1st Avenue in New York where Stan Edwards played with his trio band for a few dates in 1985[6].
- Sometime between 1985 to 1986, They Might Be Giants were known to have performed either a show or a series of shows[7] at the Unique Clothing Warehouse at 726 Broadway[8], also known as the Unique Boutique. When asked about playing at the venue in 2025, John Flansburgh said[9]:
It was a good paying gig at a moment where we didn’t have many. It was very sweet. They had little signs over the store that referenced our songs so I wonder if it happened in early '86. Did we play in a window? I can kind of remember loading in, and the staff being super supportive, and that we got paid for something that I felt like we’d do for free. But I don’t remember the actual performance or crowd.
- Robby Virus of the band Two Party System recalled on Threads seeing They Might Be Giants at Unique Boutique[10]:
It was maybe a year before the release of their first album, so they were unknown at the time. Everyone in the store pretty much ignored them except for me and the friend I was with. We instantly recognized their genius. Several years later my band opened for them at The Grotto in New Haven, Connecticut. I asked them about that gig at Unique Boutique and they said they hated it because no one paid them any attention.
