Unknown dates[edit]
- One of John Flansburgh and John Linnell's earliest performances together was as the backing band for their friend Raoul Rosenberg and his ventriloquist dummy, Julius. The gig took place at a party in Brooklyn, though the exact date and location are not known. Flansburgh has described it as the duo's first "professional" show,[1] recalling in a 1994 interview: "It was a birthday party for a political activist; it was a bunch of rich people, so they were payin'." The set included several songs written by Rosenberg,[2] as well as a cover of the Rolling Stones' "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction". The show seems to predate the duo's adoption of the name They Might Be Giants (which they took from Rosenberg), likely dating it to 1981 or 1982.[3] Rosenberg's act was at one point billed as Julius and The Rosenbergs, which could have been the name used for this performance.[4]
