They Might Be Giants has long since been recognized as a progressive band, not only musically, but in their methods of getting their music to their fans. Originally pioneering the Dial-A-Song concept after John Linnell broke his wrist in a bike accident and John Flansburgh's apartment was burgled, the band learned that special projects such as these are not only a great way to disseminate their music, but to also retain a loyal fanbase and continue innovating.

Besides these personal projects, also listed are two projects in which the band participated for some time providing original music; the Dunkin' Donuts ad campaign "America Runs On Dunkin'", and the television show Malcolm In The Middle.
