[edit] TMBG Song on Daily Show (?)

I know that TMBG does most the music for the show, and last night, there was a song that was an essay aboput sending corbas with parachutes into Iraq. The vocals sounded a little bit unlike either John, but could easily have been Linnel using a wierd accent, and the music sounded very Giant-ish. Does anybody have a confirm / deconfirm on this? -AtionSong 19:17, 26 Apr 2006 (CDT)

No evidence on my part, but I would be genuinely surprised if that voice matched either of the Johns'. ~ magbatz 19:55, 26 Apr 2006 (CDT)
It was Jonathan Coulton, who has worked with John Hodgman before. --buschap

[edit] New logo

Could somebody either point me to or send me the file for the new logo? I'd like to update it at WikiIndex. — User:ACupOfCoffee@ 15:08, 18 Apr 2006 (CDT)

Here you go: http://www.tmbw.net/images/wiki.png (I made it :D) -CapitalQ / @ / 15:37, 18 Apr 2006 (CDT)

[edit] More Cartoon NEtwork?

ON cartoon network, I sawthis commercial that had cartoon characters throwing this yellow glowing ball. I think it was supposed to be the sun. But what was playing in the background? A totally sped up (like rock and roll, not fast forward) Why Does the Sun Shine? --She's an Angel

That would be how They Might Be Giants has been playing Why Does The Sun Shine live for the last decade or so, and yeah, we had that in the news last year. It's also on the song page for Why Does The Sun Shine (Live STD) under trivia. :) -CapitalQ / @ / 19:35, 19 Apr 2006 (CDT)
*Continually bangs head against desk* --She's an Angel
Haha, yeah. It's been released on Severe Tire Damage and the Dial-A-Song compilation. -71.253.132.43

[edit] Audible.com

I don't know if anyone is aware of this, but several radio shows that include TMBG songs are available for purchase on audible.com. I haven't bought them yet, so I can't guarantee that all of the songs are there or that they're high sound quality, but here's the info I found about them (I hope these links will work; if not, you'll have to do a search for them):

  • The Studio 360 episode "The Beach," which includes TMBG Mini-Brass performances, is available here with the following description:
"In case you couldn't make it to the tropics this winter vacation, Studio 360 hits the Coney Island beach, in a show recorded last summer with musical guests They Might Be Giants. Host Kurt Andersen slathers on the sunblock as he introduces you to a sand sculptor who takes castle construction very seriously. Plus, music from They Might Be Giants, written just for the beach. (Original Broadcast Date: July 5, 2003)"
"They Might Be Giants performs the theme song they wrote for To The Best of Our Knowledge. Then, William Tsutsui, author of Godzilla on My Mind: Fifty Years of the King of Monsters, tells Anne Strainchamps about the original Godzilla and why he became a cultural icon in Japan. Also, New York Times Magazine columnist Rob Walker talks with Steve Paulson about the Subservient-Chicken.com Web site and why it's a new kind of advertising. Tom Matthews is a screenwriter who's just published his first novel, Like We Care, which tells what happens when some teenagers simply stop spending money on all the stuff that's marketed to them. Then, Doug Gordon catches up with Neil Innes, who wrote and sang the tunes for The Rutles, Eric Idle's parody of The Beatles. Finally, Jim Fleming talks with screenwriter/author David Hughes who tells us some of the reasons why a script might never get made into a film. (Broadcast Date: December 1, 2004)"
  • The Next Big Thing episode "Captain of the Saucer Squad," which includes Contrecoup, is available here with the following description:
"Works-in-progress by guitarist Marc Ribot. Wordplay, with lexicographer Erin McKean, They Might Be Giants singer/songwriter John Linnell, and Boston College junior Billy Hurley. An artful diatribe against bad table manners. And the latest in a series of characters created for The Next Big Thing by David Cale. (Broadcast Date: September 2, 2005)"
  • That episode is also available here with the following description:
"This week, we'll hear works-in-progress by guitarist Marc Ribot; wordplay with lexicographer Erin McKean and They Might Be Giants singer/songwriter John Linnell; and Boston College junior Billy Hurley. Also, an artful diatribe against bad table manners, and the latest in a series of characters created for The Next Big Thing by David Cale. (Broadcast Date: January 7, 2005)"
  • There's another episode of the Next Big Thing called "Phantom Limb Phenomena" that says it has a John Linnell song, but I don't know what it is (maybe Contrecoup again?). It's available here with the following description:
"The adventures of comedy duo Ahna Tessler and Lauren Engel, who make their way to L.A. with their Hollywood pitch. Also this week, phantom limbs in history and literature; three songs on three banjos from musician Tony Trischka; a fourth song, this one from John Linnell of They Might Be Giants; and one-minute vacations from around the world. (Broadcast Date: September 9, 2005)"
  • That episode is also available here with the following description:
"This week, we review a record of achievement for record of achievement both for the man working in President Bush's shadow, and for a world-famous sheep in New Zealand. Also this week: three songs on three banjos from musician Tony Trischka; a fourth song, this one from John Linnell of They Might Be Giants; phantom limbs in history and literature; and one-minute vacations from around the world. (Broadcast Date: January 14, 2005)"

And there are other shows with TMBG interviews, but I don't know if there are any songs on them. So if anybody has these and could report on them, or if anybody wants to get them and let everybody here know how they are, please do! I'll probably do it eventually, but who knows when it'll happen. ~Drew

[edit] Patrolled edits

So, registered users can mark newly made edits as patrolled (and I guess that means deemed un-spammyish). I, and most probably a lot other users, wouldn't mind at all performing that little task to make sure no one's screwing around on the wiki. But-- as far as I can tell, only the admins seem to actually do it. My question: is "marking as patrolled" something open to everybody involved in the wiki or is it rather reserved for those who can be most trusted in protecting the web site (i.e. admins)? I don't hold an opinion one way or the other; I'm just ignorant to how it's all done. ~ magbatz 22:38, 13 Apr 2006 (CDT)... Also, pretty unrelated, I think we're getting near the point where we should archive some of this talk page. It's apparently 38 kilobytes long ("some browsers may have problems editing pages approaching or longer than 32kb") and the newer and older main-page talk-pages are only 35kb and 31kb respectively. ~ magbatz 22:43, 13 Apr 2006 (CDT)

If you'd like, feel free to patrol your own edits or any others that you review, as long as they're clean. I still look over every single change made on the wiki just in case, so it doesn't really change my job. :D As for the archiving, I actually went through this page and archived every ended conversation very recently...I'd archive more, but the problem is, a lot of these conversations are still ongoing (or awaiting responses). -CapitalQ / @ / 22:52, 13 Apr 2006 (CDT)
Ah. Thanks for the info, and I guess I'll help myself in patrolling edits-- new excitement (hee hee)! ~ magbatz 22:59, 13 Apr 2006 (CDT)
Dug around and found more stuff to archive from this page, thanks for the suggestion. :) -CapitalQ / @ / 23:07, 13 Apr 2006 (CDT)

Uh, guys. Whoever's marking vandalism as patrolled just because you looked at it or reverted it via the page history, please stop. Vandalism should only be marked patrolled by an admin, because we're the only people who can fully take care of it. ThisMightBeABot doesn't just ban people, revert changes and add to the spam blacklist on its own, we have to start the process by telling it what the spammed URLs are. Thanks. -CapitalQ / @ / 08:47, 16 Apr 2006 (CDT)

[edit] Pics

Can I use any pictures I find on google for the wiki? I'm not very familiar with the rights management here. - Whirrrlwind (Woosh!) 06:43, 14 Apr 2006 (CDT)

Any TMBG related pictures, yeah. :) -CapitalQ / @ / 09:16, 14 Apr 2006 (CDT)

[edit] Clock Radio

I just wanted to know: When TMBG updates the Clock Radio, do I have to reinstall it to hear the updated songs, or does it do it automatically since it's streaming audio?

Every time you open Clock Radio it retrieves the latest list of songs automatically. :) -CapitalQ / @ / 18:17, 30 Mar 2006 (CST)

[edit] MediaWiki 1.6

Just a heads up — a stable version of MediaWiki 1.6 was released yesterday. — User:ACupOfCoffee@ 18:16, 6 Apr 2006 (CDT)

Jeez, now we're way behind. :D -CapitalQ / @ / 18:18, 6 Apr 2006 (CDT)

[edit] TMBG Collectibles

I don't know how many of you have seen the page on my site on which I have some of the TMBG related stuff that I have collected over the years. I still have a ton of stuff that I need to sort through, determine what's worth posting and get on there, and I was wondering if maybe there could be a collectibles section on here? There would be obvious omissions like my Flexi Disc and Long Tall Weekend, but I think that people might like to see a gallery that includes stuff like my Purple Toupee 8-Track, the Gigantic Coffee and Cologne, the MC Skat Kat mispressing or my TMBG Fezes, as well as many, many other items that I have yet to catalog.. My point is of course that it would be easier to put the stuff on here and then just have my page refer to the wiki. I would be happy to donate it all, and more. Of course, other people should add photos/descriptions of their stuff, as well. What do you think? -TDK 17:15, 23 Mar 2006 (CST)

Holy crap, I've never even heard of most of that stuff! --Martorano

Thats a great idea! - Half Empty 17:36, 23 Mar 2006 (CST)

Love it. :D -CapitalQ / @ / 19:36, 23 Mar 2006 (CST)

[edit] Tagline Idea

I was thinking that we could start a way to rate the taglines. I have seen some great ones, and some not-so-great ones. I'm not sure what we could do with the ratings, but that's what discussion is for, right? What do you think?--tehbagel 13:01, 28 Mar 2006 (CST)

Some of them certainly make me cringe. Perhaps a simple rating scale (1-5) and then a filter to keep those with low averages off the front page? It's a thought, anyway. --Salt-Man Z 16:05, 5 Apr 2006 (CDT)
Maybe a system where the users vote on the taglines when you are submitted. Then, numbers 1-5 can be displayed somehow underneath. Or, maybe an award should be offered.--tehbagel 16:37, 5 Apr 2006 (CDT)
If you don't like the current tagline, feel free to make your own and change it. The tagline is and always has been free to edit by everyone, and if one is inappropriate (or really bad), it'll instantly be changed anyway. A ratings system for the tagline is a bit too much. -CapitalQ / @ / 16:43, 5 Apr 2006 (CDT)
You're missing the whole point. There are some great taglines that never get seen or are up for only a few minutes. I think we should have a "best tagline" award every week. This tagline would be displayed the whole following week under or above the dynamic tagline. This would also provide some motivation to create enjoyable taglines.--tehbagel 22:47, 5 Apr 2006 (CDT)
I'm not missing any point; we have a tagline archive for a reason. I just seriously don't see why we need two taglines on the main page just because people are too lazy to look at the archive. -CapitalQ / @ / 05:34, 6 Apr 2006 (CDT)

Is there a way to make them appear randomly every time you load the page?

No, and while that's not a bad idea, it kind of defeats the purpose of having a "current" tagline. -CapitalQ / @ / 16:43, 5 Apr 2006 (CDT)

[edit] Dial-a-down

Does anyone have a theory of how dial-a-song went down again?

melting?, power failure?, Flansy kicking the power cord out by accident?, who knows?

[edit] some kind of picture?

I think the main page could use any picture (just one). It would make it more attractive. Otherwise the only thing you ever see is that guy in the logo. -24.11.11.247

That guy is William Allen White, and I was thinking the main page might look a bit nicer with this picture I made in the background of the news. Here's how it would look when added: Click. I don't want to make any big changes like that without getting approval and opinions first, though. -CapitalQ / @ / 09:32, 31 Mar 2006 (CST)
Duke33 just set it up. :D -CapitalQ / @ / 10:02, 31 Mar 2006 (CST)

[edit] No WikiTikkiTavi!

I have found that the Homestar runner wiki has just regraded to WikiTikkiTavi which is really a downgrade because their server cant support MediaWiki very well. Check for your self here to see the terrible truth! Make sure that this wiki is not downgraded!--Troggie 13:13, 1 Apr 2006 (CST)

(Looks at calendar) ...Good job. -CapitalQ / @ / 13:22, 1 Apr 2006 (CST)
This wiki never used WikkiTikkiTavi. Before MediaWiki, it was UseMod — User:ACupOfCoffee@ 13:36, 1 Apr 2006 (CST)
I'm on hrwiki too, but I just decided that it is an extremely cruel april fools joke. Even though I konw it's not. --Angel
Actually, it was an April Fool's joke. Check it again. They locked the database, disabled everybody's personal javascript and css, deleted the "Monobook" skin, uploaded another skin that looked like 'Tavi, renamed that one "Monobook", and unlocked the database. The whole thing was planned on IRC. — User:ACupOfCoffee@ 23:49, 1 Apr 2006 (CST)
Told you. :D -CapitalQ / @ / 09:52, 2 Apr 2006 (CDT)

[edit] News Item?

I don't know if this is newsworthy or not, but I know we like to list links to pages TMBG fans will enjoy in the news section. Well, on a site called Pandora, I have created a music station called They Might Be Giants Radio (not to be confused with Radio They Might Be Giants). Is this news worthy? -AtionSong 20:56, 2 Apr 2006 (CDT)

Uh..can't anyone make an artist radio on that site by clicking Create station or whatever and typing They Might Be Giants? -CapitalQ / @ / 21:00, 2 Apr 2006 (CDT)

[edit] Blank Front Page

I'm getting a completely blank page when I go to http://www.tmbw.net/. Anybody else getting that? LitMatch 08:03, 5 Apr 2006 (CDT)

Yes, i'm seeing that too. We'll investigate. Thanks for the heads up! --Duke33 08:14, 5 Apr 2006 (CDT)
Me three. Good thing for going through other pages... She's an Angel
Very odd. View the source of the page and not even any HTML tags show up. Vandalism? Server error?--tehbagel 15:38, 5 Apr 2006 (CDT)
Fixed.--tehbagel 15:39, 5 Apr 2006 (CDT)
What the heck? Somehow our .htaccess file (which does the redirect on the main page) got delorted! I restored it. --Duke33 20:20, 5 Apr 2006 (CDT)

[edit] Lyrics Footer

I've noticed that for some reason we're using a different nav_stub on the lyrics pages called Template:Lyrics Footer. It looks very different from the other nav_stub and I don't see any reason why we need a different one. Is there a reason? If not, the page should end:

|}
to close off the table started in Template:Lyrics Header. Then:
{{Nav_Stub|{{PAGENAME}}}}[[Category:{{NAMESPACE}}|{{PAGENAMEE}}]]
like all of the other pages have. You needs to replace
{{Lyrics Footer}}

I'm sure the bot could do it. --badqueso 23:15, 15 Mar 2006 (CST)

The normal stub was too wide for the new lyrics pages, so a new footer was especially created. Also, the lyrics header is ended at the top of the page. -CapitalQ / @ / 06:11, 16 Mar 2006 (CST)
I think I see what you're talking about. But if you put "|}" before it, it will close the <pre> box and the stub will appear below it instead of inside it. I tested it and it's no larger there than on any other page. --badqueso 11:25, 16 Mar 2006 (CST)

[edit] Posting tabs and lyrics is ILLEGAL.

Posting copyrighted tabs and lyrics online is illegal without explicit permission. Even reading such things would make you the equivalent of an evil music downloader. I truly hope none of the Outer Party have violated these sacred and sensible laws.[1][2]

Downloading music given out by the band for free or downloading the stuff you pay for isn't illegal, immoral, or evil. Music downloading has such a bad reputation.

They Might Be Giants are fully aware of the existence of this website, and they even linked to it in a newsletter a year or two ago. If they support the website, they obviously aren't upset about the lyrics and tabs here. If someone does want for them to be removed, they'll send Duke a Cease and Desist or something, which I seriously doubt will happen anytime in the near future, if at all. -CapitalQ / @ / 07:49, 4 Mar 2006 (CST)

I have to agree with CapitalQ. Also, everyone knows you can just google "song name lyrics" and get lyrics. I mean, why would that be such a big deal? And as CapitalQ said, TMBG knows of this website. I mean, hell, if they can find a MySpace site (which there are tons of) I'm pretty sure that they can just google for themselves and find the Wikipedia page which explicitly links to TMBW. Those are my two cents on the matter. --ArAn 14:42, 5 Mar 2006 (CST)

I thought it was only illegal if you profitted (financially) from using other people's material. Or am I being naive? -Martorano

Well, it's still illegal, per se, but you most likely won't get prosecuted. - Kooky

[edit] Rarities

This has probably been discussed before, but is there a good place to buy/download TMBG rarities i.e. the Hello recordings, TMBG Unlimited stuff, etc.? Unfortunately I don't think I'd even heard of the band when these things were going on, but now I'd really like to get ahold of them. If anyone knows I'd really appreciate it. -Martorano

The only place is eBay. Except TMBG UnLtd, you can't buy that anywhere (it would be illegal). -CapitalQ / @ / 12:59, 26 Feb 2006 (CST)

I haven't had much luck with eBay, actually, but thanks for the suggestion. I wonder why the Johns don't make their rarities available to download directly from their official store. I mean, it's great that they're selling albums like "Flood" and "Lincoln" but I wonder how many people are actually buying when that stuff is widely available on, say, iTunes. I've already emailed the Download Store about getting some harder-to-find stuff available; if they get a lot of requests maybe they'll think about it. So to anyone you're like me who's had trouble finding certain things, let them know! -Martorano

[edit] Suggestions?

I was wondering if there is a suggestion page anywhere out there where we can suggest things to add? Or is this it? If this is it, I think that we should have some way of seeing all the songs sung by Linnell or Flans. You know, like a page that says "Songs sung by Linnell" or something. Ohhhhh I really hope this makes sense! --ArAn 15:01, 1 Feb 2006 (EST)

Nope, this is pretty much it as far as a suggestion page goes. It's not perfect, but you can go to Linnell's page and then click on "What links here". That should give you a pretty good list of what songs they sing. See this - here --Duke33 15:23, 1 Feb 2006 (EST)
We do have an Ideas page, but this is the only place where you'll get a response.

[edit] Lyrics idea

I think it would be really neat if we linked things in the lyrics to their references, ie. Longhines Symphonette. Mattl 14:02, 25 Jan 2006 (EST)

What is this, Wikipedia? :D -CapitalQ / @ / 14:03, 25 Jan 2006 (EST)

Yes :P Mattl 15:00, 25 Jan 2006 (EST)

[edit] Tour Bus Stop

I think this wiki needs a TourBusStop page for the MeatballWiki TourBus system. Agreement? Dissention? I say this because there are a couple of tours that have been suggested which include TMBW. Anybody wanna set it up? Want me to set it up? I set up the one at HRWiki. Or would everybody rather this wiki not be hooked into the TourBus system? — User:ACupOfCoffee@ @ 19:59, 2 Jan 2006 (EST)

I've honestly never heard of it...What is it?? --Duke33 20:04, 2 Jan 2006 (EST)
According to [3]
The TourBus doesn't just link wikis - there are already hundreds of link pages that do this already: InterWikiLinks, TwinPages, and plain old links. But these link pages are neither easy to find nor easy to work with: people won't find their way efficiently, and this is where public transportation steps in to help. Now there is a growing number of wikis, they have the constant need to connect and to be aware of their neighbourhood. The TourBus makes the wealth of communities much more accessible by connecting wikis according to their topics and interests.
— User:ACupOfCoffee@ @ 20:14, 2 Jan 2006 (EST)
Sounds ok to me. If you want to set it up, please feel free! --Duke33 09:56, 3 Jan 2006 (EST)
Done. Now comes the part where the page is mercilessly edited. This Might Be A Wiki:TourBusStop — User:ACupOfCoffee@ @ 23:02, 3 Jan 2006 (EST)
Ok, so now that we have the page set up here, does somebody need to set something up on the TourBus page on meatballwiki? I guess i'm still not too familiar with how that's supposed to work. --Duke33 10:15, 4 Jan 2006 (EST)
Yeah — me. — User:ACupOfCoffee@ 21:28, 17 Jan 2006 (EST)

[edit] John Isley

I saw Billy Joel's "Movin' Out" and in the Play Bill: "John Isley (Saxophones/Percussion). Featured performer: New York Horns, They Might Be Giants, Isaac Hayes..."

[edit] Exquisite Dead Guy - Alternate Version

I hope this is the correct place to post this...

I have a file with a non-album version of "Exquisite Dead Guy" purporting to be track 01 from the album "Exquisite Dead Guy". It has brassy sounds during the verses instead of strings, a different vocal track, and other small differences I haven't yet enumerated. I couldn't seem to dig up anything about this particular track or album (EP?).

Does anyone know anything about it and if so, please share.

It's totally different, but it's definitely TMBG. Sounds like a demo. -AlmostJinkies UPDATE - Actually, now that I listen closer, it sounds like a Mini Brass track. Never heard of a Mini Brass version of that though... can't find an eMusic entry for TMBG with that song either.

There's a synth playing the same part in a sawtoothish wave along with the two horns during the verse and solo horn in the first half of the bridge and two horns in harmony in the latter half.

It was one of the free songs TMBG released through eMusic before TMBG Unlimited started. (Or, at least, they released a free alternate version of Exquisite Dead Guy on an "album" called Exquistite Dead Guy. I'd have to hear and compare this version to know for sure if it's the same one.) I've been planning on adding them all to the Free Tunes page for a while but haven't gotten around to it yet. ~Drew

Well, add it! Add it!!

Okay, it's been added here: Exquisite Dead Guy (eMusic) Enjoy! ~Drew

I forgot all about those eMusic Freebies. Here's a page with a list of all eleven. I guess that pages need to be created for the other two live versions given away. -TDK 06:39, 25 Mar 2006 (CST)

[edit] Covers Page

The number of covers being made of TMBG songs is growing. We should add a category for covers and start archiving all the ones we find. --Droffats 16:34, 20 Dec 2005 (EST)

Are you thinking just one page, similar to the page we have that are covers that TMBG has done? --Duke33 20:43, 20 Dec 2005 (EST)
Yes. It would just be a list of all TMBG songs covered by other people. Each entry would consist of: What song was covered, the band that covered it, and a link to the covered song. --Droffats 21:05, 20 Dec 2005 (EST)
Sounds like a good idea to me. We could also move some of the "this song has been covered by..." trivia off the individual pages, if we did this. Go for it! --Duke33 21:20, 20 Dec 2005 (EST)

This seems like a good place to discuss Reprehensible Songs' Celebrity TMBG covers. I think it's a great idea, but IMnot-soHO, their parodies are awful. Just to show how it should be done, I intend to record a couple of celebrity parodies myself (a capella) and link them on my userpage. First tries are up. --M. Fudd 17:33, 2 Mar 2006 (CST)

[edit] Tour Question

Hey. This is going to be my first TMBG concert, and I want nothing to get into my way. I'm looking for the Philly location, and I was wondering: does Pollstar offer a way of buying tickets? I tried to find a way, but I couldn't. Is it just a place for announcing tour dates? They didn't have anything about tickets on the venue site, or Ticketmaster. Your help is greatly appreciated. Crabs Quartucci

Pollstar does not sell tickets and tickets for that particular show are not yet on sale. Usually shows at the TLA sell on ticketmaster.com, so keep your eye on there. -TDK 06:49, 25 Mar 2006 (CST)

[edit] new dial-a-song

anyone have any idea on the title or such for it? i used my cell to record it, so i could transcribe lyrics, i just have NO idea how do do all of that.

See Why Be Realistic?, our shot at the song's name. ~ Magbatz 22:46, 29 Mar 2006 (CST)

ha, i wanted to title it "we live in a dump"

And that turned out to be right! — User:ACupOfCoffee@ 09:55, 12 Apr 2006 (CDT)

[edit] MySpace Downloads

Now that the TMBG MySpace is oficially official, we should keep track of the free downloads there. I saw that they were offering Why Did You Grow A Beard so I added the link on that page. The other download up currently was already available as one of the Free Tunes, so I didn't bother linking it. LitMatch 12:05, 8 Mar 2006 (CST)

[edit] Live Album?

Check out this link: [4] It says that in June They will release a live album of a show at The Forum in London. Does anyone have any info? --BlarJotunn 11:42, 4 Mar 2006 (PDT)

Almost. It says that in June 2005 They will have released a live album. Considering that 2005 has come and passed, I think we should take that with a grain of salt. JohnB

[edit] Ratings System Adjustment?

I couldn't help but notice this shortly after the Miniature Sidewalk Whirlwind page was created:

"This song is currently ranked #22 out of 851 songs, by TMBW.Net users. (1 users have given this song an average rating of 9.)"

It doesn't seem right that a song should be ranked at all with a single vote. Is there any way to keep songs out of the rankings until a certain prerequisite number of wikians have voted on it? Or is that a dumb idea? -TDK 10:42, 10 Feb 2006 (CST)

Well, I think that it should be weighted depending on how many have voted. Okay, like if 100 people voted for it to be a 9 it should be higher than if 1 person voted for it as a 9. Does that make sense? --ArAn 13:51, 10 Feb 2006 (CST)
Yeah, i've been playing around with that idea. How about a minimum of 5 votes being required to make it eligible for rating? --Duke33 14:33, 10 Feb 2006 (CST)
Five might take awhile, but it seems like it would be the best number for a true position. -CapitalQ / @ / 14:49, 10 Feb 2006 (CST)
I think it's working...please post any bugs here. --Duke33 13:35, 11 Feb 2006 (CST)

[edit] Free Tunes password

No one knows the password right now except TMBG, but they'll soon realize their error (after receiving a torrent of emails from angry fans), and then divulge the password. Stay patient until then and stop asking everywhere. This applies to everyone. -CapitalQ / @ / 12:42, 11 Feb 2006 (CST)

I think I had it a four or five months ago, but that email seems to have magically disappeared (which is odd, because Gmail never gets rid of anything). But then again I could just be delusional. — User:ACupOfCoffee@ 10:34, 15 Feb 2006 (CST)

[edit] Music Video page?

Hi, I've been frequenting this wiki for about two months, and I think it's great. I was trying to see if there was a page that listed all of They Might Be Giants' music videos, but I couldn't find such a page. Unless I didn't look hard enough, I think there should definitely be a page that lists all of They Might Be Giants' official and unofficial music videos. I would certainly use that page often as a great resource to show the awesomeness of They Might Be Giants to my friends.--Tomthefirst

Aha! Thank you very much! -Tomthefirst

[edit] Wikipedia

I noticed a little while ago that Their article on Wikipedia is no longer considered "good". The reason for this is a lack of references. While scanning the article, I noticed quite a few errors in the discography section. Looking over its talk page showed me why: Nobody there knows all that much about Them. There was actually a debate over just which releases are the 11 studio albums. The consensus was that Long Tall Weekend and Here Come the ABCs were not in that list, but that STD was. Needless to say, I was floored. There is an entire category on Wikipedia for They Might Be Giants and, frankly, most of them could use work. Very few of them are stubs. Most of them are inaccurate or vague. This looks like a job for...US! What does everyone say? — User:ACupOfCoffee@ 03:46, 23 Feb 2006 (CST)

It's pretty much been cleaned up, Now it just needs a bibliography. Help on this part would be especially appreciated. — User:ACupOfCoffee@ 21:24, 26 Feb 2006 (CST)
Not to revive a sorta old issue, but I've been adding infoboxes to any album or EP page I find that doesn't have one. So, HOORAY! Melchior 16:12, 16 Mar 2006 (CST)

[edit] Main Page Help?

How come the edit is gone on the main page? I had an article I wanted to post, but I can't seem to do so... --Sir_Zman

Click Add a news item on the bottom of the main page. -CapitalQ 15:26, 5 Jan 2006 (EST)

Odd how its different from every other page...oh well, thanks for the info... --Sir_Zman

The Main Page has been "protected". I'm guessing so that it won't get any spam or vandalism. Whenever I visit a wiki for the first time and the first thing I see is spam, I know that there's either littlre interest in that particular wiki, that nobody cares about it enough to clean it up, or that there's hardly anybody active on it, that it's basicaly "dead" and what's the point of trying to join a dead community? — User:ACupOfCoffee@ 15:11, 6 Feb 2006 (CST)

[edit] Pics from NYE

I saw on the newsgroup that Mizary has pics up at http://www.elvis77.com/tmbg2005nye/. I have some at my website too, http://www.jwoltman.net/news.php?extend.86 .

Nice pics, thanks! I especially love the Auld Lang Syne video. I've added a link to your page to the wiki page for this show—feel free to edit/emend/remove as you like, of course. — aliste

Why is it that you guys don't care about giving away audio that's for sale at the official store? It seems like if there's video attached to it, that makes it okay?? Is your justification that it's lower quality... ?-TDK 21:49, 14 Jan 2006 (EST)

Can you buy a fan-made video of TMBG performing there? ;) -Ecks
If someone official doesn't want it online, they can tell me. I uploaded it for my friends who were at the show with me. - repugnant

[edit] New Song Category

I have an idea for a new song category, how do I go about creating it? -Martorano

The category would be for songs written by one of the Johns yet sung by the other. For example, "The World's Address" (written by Linnell/sung by Flans) and "Man It's So Loud In Here" (written by Flans/sung by Linnell).

Really? "Man, It's So Loud In Here" was written by Flans? Well, if you can think of a bit more than 2 songs that fit that description, just find the template (the link's on the main page somewhere), fill in the songs on that, and then add the song theme (manually) to each song page. -Magbatz

Well, in Gigantic, the demo that Flans plays is him singing it (besides saying that no other band member had heard the demo before). -Ecks
Actually, the band had just not yet heard the final (dance) mix of the song, which is what's on Mink Car. It's not a demo, and it's not Flansburgh singing it. I'm not sure why you thought it was. -TDK 08:52, 15 Feb 2006 (CST)
Spiffy. To whoever came up with this idea, there's also Subliminal (Flansy wrote the words, and then JL came up with the music and ending up doing the vocals) and Rat Patrol (Flans sings on the demo, but Linnell sings on the album) if you still want to do that page. -Magbatz

I guess I should log in before I post a wonderful new idea. Anyway, what should I call the new category, any suggestions? -Martorano

Sorry it took so long, but I added a new category called "Swapped Vocals". -Martorano

[edit] Two things about TV appearances

First, if anyone knows a lot of them please make a page for them.

second, if anyone has any videos or mp3's of TV appearances please post them here. I, for one really want to see the they'll nedd A Crane performance which i think was on Letterman. Anyways, please help!

Videos. Though, there are some missing, such as Boss Of Me and Your Racist Friend and She's Actual Size. Man, It's So Loud In Here has an MP3 of a very good performance on Conan. -Ecks

I have Birdhouse in Your Soul and Istanbul (Not Constantinople) from The Tonight Show from around '90-'91 and Your Racist Friend from Late Night with David Letterman from the same year but no video capture card. Should I bother to find a way to digitize them?
It souldn't be too hard to get just the audio.
I'm on it then (it's mono :( ). I also MAY still have an MTV performance of "Why Does the Sun Shine?" but thus far have not been able to find it. After this and the Exquisite Dead Guy demo I don't have any other rare (?) stuff.

[edit] Li'l Help?

Hey,

Cool site, I run a wiki too at: http://www.wikiguitar.net

I am really trying to get the thing off the ground and I wondering if anyone wants to help...But more specifically the tabs on this site would be extremely helpful! Is there anyone who would have a problem with me adding the tabs from here...to my site?

Just let me know. Danielecook@gmail.com

It's a wiki, of course you can. Everything on here is licensed via the GFDL (Gnu Free Documentation License), and is free to take as long as appropriate credit is given. Actually, if anything on here isn't GFDL/fair use it's got to go, because we could get our asses sued off otherwise. Now if TMBG gave this site their blessing like The Brothers Chaps did with HRWiki.... I think you get my point. — User:ACupOfCoffee@ 04:33, 8 Dec 2005 (EST) LEGAL EDIT: No it's not. [edit] Attention: Everybody Whose Username Begins with a Lowercase Letter!

All of you will no longer have access to your user accounts after the upgrade is complete. There is a bug in MediaWiki 1.5 which allows usernames to only begin with a capital letter. I have seen this happen at HRWiki. Look here to see what we had to do to fix it. — User:ACupOfCoffee@ 15:04, 30 Nov 2005 (EST)

I had reviewed that HRWiki page on Tom's suggestion, and I didn't really see any userids that would be affected in our user-list. If they show up with a upper-case letter in the user list, I would assume they are ok, then, correct? --Duke33 15:15, 30 Nov 2005 (EST)
Yep. Watchlists should be reset, too. And some users might have a tough time getting their user talk pages off of their watchlist, and consequently, getting the "you have new messages" box to go away. I kind of figured you admins knew about this, so this particular notice was mostly posted for the forewarning of everyone else. — User:ACupOfCoffee@ 18:00, 30 Nov 2005 (EST)

Yes, I frequently find the site down in the late night/early morning hours. It was down a few nights ago as well.
We're working on it...it's not just our site, it's our hosting provider, and it's affecting all of the sites that they host. We hope to have it resolved soon. --Duke33 11:26, 8 Dec 2005 (EST)

[edit] Podcast

The podcast is supposedly out. Where does one sign up for this? --BlarJotunn

The url is on the mainpage (at least for signing up through itunes). Ok, so we had someone throw together a page for the first podcast. Does someone want to take a stab at cleaning it up, and coming up with a podcast template? Also, i would assume that we would create pages for all the songs within the podcast. (by the way - i haven't downloaded it and listened yet...) --Duke33 10:52, 9 Dec 2005 (EST)
I'll tackle it with the Songs template too, I suppose. -Ecks

[edit] Bastard Video

Is it just me, or is this a really great video? I watched it 3 times in a row! The art is creative, it's edited on the beat of the song perfectly, and it's kind of funny. Thoughts?

Yeah, it's a great video, but I must say, it looks much better on a TV. The DVD to Flash conversion process sure can take a chunk out of the quality. -CapitalQ

[edit] TV Appearances

I think it would be a pretty cool idea if someone could make up a page of all of They Might Be Giants' TV aapearances. So, if anyone knows a lot of their TV appearances please make this page.

-ah ok thanks.

Does anyone know if that Clarissa Explains it all Flood Wall Fixture thing ever existed? Or did they just make it for the show? Because I was always envious of that....

Someone needs to make a They Day Page.

Some of the lyrics pages look funny, with <p> tags appearing in them somehow (see Boss Of Me for an example). And the spacing given with <br> looks kind of silly in the current style sheet.

I was going to fix it, but then I realized we may want to talk about it first. Perhaps this time around we can agree on what a lyrics page is supposed to look like? I've always thought the <pre> enclosed pages looked silly for lyrics, and they look even sillier now, with the dotted border around them. Thoughts? --Veloso

Why not use <p> tags with a class of "lyrics"? Then you can edit now and worry later with the magic of CSS.

I noticed that the news about the TMBG Radio tribute was posted on the 22nd, but marked as being for the 21st. SO, is that radio show at 10pm going on on the 23rd, or the 22nd?

I'd think that it would be on the 22nd, as the schedule page on kxua says that there's a special artist feature every Wednesday.

The stuff they're playing right now is awful. Dozen-minute songs of slow-paced melodically disgusting humming and whistling is hardly something I'd want to listen to.

Oh, and I guess this is Arkansas time?

[edit] Dial-A-Song's revival?

I was just listening to the TMBG Clock Radio and just surfin' when I caught the end of an announcement about listening tgo your favorite TMBG songs on your cell phone. I can only assume this means Dial-A-Song is coming back. They also said it coming very soon. The clock radio has been known to repeat old announcements, so I don't know what this means. [edit] Nope...sorry

Sorry Random...there's nothing you can really do to delete it. What i might suggest however, is tag the page with a category of "To be deleted" or something, and then drop the admins a line, if you come across something like this in the future. -- Duke33

I thought this would fit best here. Anyone know why there are these Chinese links each time I visit a song page like... James K. Polk (Dial-A-Song Anthology Version)? - Blitz

I'm not exactly sure where to put this, but on the song ratings page, shouldn't it just be limited to bona-fide TMBG songs? It's kinda wierd to have the State Songs up there with Birdhouse and the like. - Drumstick

[edit] Geekier Instruments

Has anyone ever considered having a page for piano/accordian chords/tabs intstead of just the usual guitar and bass?

I'm not sure that that would work. That would be sheet music which can't be put up as text as far as I know. To upload files would be troublesome, I don't think there is any standard filetype. Some sheet music can be obtained through midi files, which are readily available on the internet. They tend to be roughly made, but piano/accordian parts can easily be extracted from them. -Augie 22:08, 19 Jan 2005 (EST)

We could just right the keys. Like A A A B G G G A, or something like that. I'm not sure, but I think we could make it work

I don't think so. Maybe if there was a link to download a midi file on the main song pages. The problem is, the music would only be accesible to people with the right software. We could also upload images of sheet music, but that would not be editable. -Augie 19:05, 20 Jan 2005 (EST)

Um, I don't think a separate page for piano chords is necessary. To tell the truth, our "Guitar Tabs" page is a heinous lie. There's maybe 10 actual guitar tablatures in that section. The rest are chord progressions, which are useful for any instrument. Rarely will you find extensive sheet music on a given band, without it either being the product of one prolific (and lifeless) devotee or a blatant copyright infringement of published material. And, as any musician who's looked for TMBG before knows, this barely exists for Them. For most people with halfway decent chops, most melodies included in a given song can be figured out using the chords as your starting point. -Charlie June 14, 2005

Any idea on how to do that? I don't know if there is a way in mediawiki to create an RSS feed for a single page. If someone can find out, let me know.--Duke33 22:06, 31 Jan 2006 (EST)
Here. I dunno, good information is strangely scarce. -Ecks
According to meta (a treasure trove of mediawiki info), there's no way to do it for a single page, at least for right now. If this is something we're really interested in, I could probably create one using PHP though. --Duke33 09:19, 1 Feb 2006 (EST)
Try this - [5] . Please let me know how it looks...This is just a first stab, so if it's not working, i'm not surprised! --Duke33 23:04, 2 Feb 2006 (EST)
Well, I don't have Firefox with me, but on Google's personalized home page, all of the titles came up as "Current Events". So while it worked, I vote to tweak it so that it shows some of the news. -Ecks

Ok, I have two solutions for you guys. First is Wotzwot. With Wotzwow, you point them to a webpage and pick out unique strings from the HTML source to mark where RSS items start and end. I played with it for a little while and came up with this. The genereator split up the items fine, but it did not detect the Titles from the Desctiption. Which makes for ugly RSS in the aggregator. So I did a little more searching and found a program called RSS Wizard. Which does the exact same thing as Wotzwot except it allows you to choose strings for the Title. The drawback though is you have to schedule the program to generate the RSS instead of it constantly updating online like Wotzwot. But RSS Wizard does have an option to upload the generated RSS file to an FTP server. Hope this helps you guys. Edit: I found another program that, with a quick glance, looks like RSS Wizard. I was listening to the latest FLOSS weekly (at twit.tv) and they had Jimmy Wales (Founder of Wikipedia) on. He talked about WikiNews for a little and some of the problems they have with RSS not being part of the MediaWiki code (which this is based on). What he said they do is do RSS through FeedBurner.com. [edit] Remix/Mashup category?

I wonder if there should be a category for remixes and mashups (like, for instance, the incredibly dirty- yet hilarious- Lil Kim mashup linked to in the latest Flans e-mail). I think TMBG fans would be interested to hear fan-made remixes and mashups, and this page could list and perhaps link to them, as well as track offical remixes (by Joshua Fried, the Dust Brothers, etc.). The only problem is the legality of linking to these songs- although, judging from the amused response to the Lil Kim mix I don't think the Johns mind things like mashups. -Martorano

--I agree, I have about a dozen different mashups/unauthorized remixes that I listen to on my TMBG playlist, right along with all the TMBG songs. there are some way cool ones, and some I don't know much about and about which I would like to know more, like one by Spencer Owen called TMBG Soundbite Collage. There are some TMBG sounds in there that I don't know from where they come. What do others think? We do have a page for covers of TMBG songs, maybe they could go there? We also have a Fans In Bands page that I think of as more of a comunity page, which are nice things to have that keep people coming here. Maybe if there enough people out there that use this wiki that make mixes or mashups of their own, we could have a page for that. I don't know what the legality is here or not, or what Operator Dot thinks. I know that we removed all of the TMBG mp3s, but we still have the Covers available for download. Is that okay? If it is, then mashups should be too. I was also thinking that I have seen alot of fan art out there. We don't do all that much with images (yet), but maybe we could build a fan art gallery page. I have also seen and made some tour maps of TMBG using Google maps. I think it could be cool to build a map/maps like this for TMBG here. Does anyone know if there are such things like map wikis? It could be cool to have a map that people could edit, especially one of New York City and all the places that reference TMBG with links to show pages, year pages, and so on. I have only been wikiing for a few months, but maybe some others here know if any of this could work or be helpful. (I will also post this on my talk page) Krueger 17:29, 18 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Here Come The 1-2-3's?

According to this:[6] article... TMBG is going to put out a 'Here Come The 1-2-3's' album in the spring. Is there any thruth to this..? 'Cause I sure haven't heard anything about it. -INeedACrane

Hmm... I hesitate to take this at face value. I'm thinking that the reporter may have heard someone ask them about doing a follow-up called that durring their publicity tour for the ABCs set and misunderstood. -Cronny
Actually, I was thinking the exact same thing, because this seems to be the only recorded place that says anything about this. I'm sure there would be something else about it somewhere, because it is spring already, after all. -INeedACrane
Spring just started. I'm sure we'll start hearing more about it soon. If not, I guess we can't trust New Jersey newspapers anymore. ;) -CapitalQ / @ / 18:39, 20 Mar 2006 (CST)
Hold on a second... we could trust New Jersey newspapers at one time? Has anyone put this question to Operator Dot? Tutt 12:08, 20 Apr 2006 (CDT)
Just asked Dot, she says "I don't believe that is accurate". So, there you go. -CapitalQ / @ / 12:23, 20 Apr 2006 (CDT)

Does anyone else think that the article was wrong and, though there probably will be a Here Come The 123s, it meant TMBG's Mysterious Next Album will be released this spring? That seems much more likely and would coincide nicely with their new tour. --badqueso 00:18, 14 Apr 2006 (CDT)

[edit] Review Links?

I had an idea for something that could be added to each album's page: links to external reviews (Pitchfork, Rolling Stone, Spin, etc.) What does everyone think? --Martorano

I think that's a great idea. -Cronny

I think it would be cool if there was a user reviews feature. Ideally, it would be set up by a system that would allow you to go to the album page and hit a button that generats your own review page. However, I am not a coder, but hey! It's an idea! -tomthefirst

I don't think user reviews are such a good idea. This is a TMBG fan site, so most of us have a bias. Maybe a rating system for the albums like the one already in place for the songs? --Martorano

I'll get to the album voting soon...have a couple other things that i'm working on now, like moving the downloads.--Duke33 05:59, 23 Mar 2006 (CST)

[edit] What are we doing to pigs?

Maybe I'm just a bit TMBG-happy after calling to Dial-A-Song, but... On the Daily Show, if you saw it tonight, there was a little 3-second ditty singing the name of the segment ("What are we doing to pigs?"). And although I'm anything but sure, I think I might have heard Flansy's voice as part of the vocals. ~ Magbatz 22:46, 29 Mar 2006 (CST)

I'm almost positive it was Flans. --Martorano

TMBG does the music, according to the most recent email bulletin.

I thought I saw Apollo 18 for a split second. But I'm not exactly the best looker, seeing as I get sidetracked finding Barenaked Ladies and the Beastie Boys almost everywhere in the ad.~ magbatz 12:48, 15 Apr 2006 (CDT)

[edit] Mickey Mouse song

Is the new song on that Disney page linked to in the news? If so, where do I have to look? I couldn't find it anywhere. - Whirrrlwind 16:59, 10 Apr 2006 (CDT)

[edit] Another TMBG Song in a Dunkin' Doughnuts Thing

I'm watching tv, and I just saw a commercial for some icee/coffee thing from Dunkin' Doughnuts and there was a TMBG song in it. It had something to do with a kid in a tree who didn't want to come down. Pretty sure it was Flans singing, but I only caught the tail end of it.

Neat, haven't seen that one yet. -CapitalQ / @ / 18:14, 17 Apr 2006 (CDT)
That was me; just created an account. I'm hoping it'll come on again, but I've only seen one of the new commercials so far. -Valerie

Definitely just saw another one too, it was called "Planting a Broom" or "Packing a Room", I can't tell which. Probably the second because it had to do with a family packing before a trip. Definitely. -AtionSong 20:20, 17 Apr 2006 (CDT)

-The line is "Plenty of Room."

Does anyone know if TMBG is the only one making Dunkin' Donut ads? I've heard another "Runs On Dunkin'" ad on the radio a few times and I'm calling it "Snack Machine." It's sung by a female that I don't recognize and could quite possibly be 'not TMBG'. Though if someone told me it was Them, I'd believe them. So has anyone else heard it? Or does anyone trust my hard-of-hearing-ness enough to make a page for it? --badqueso 23:46, 4 May 2006 (CDT)

I saw some commerical on tv, with these kids yelling actives they play while in there car for dunkin donuts which sounded like tmbg, a few times. - Half Empty 12:13, 26 May 2006 (CDT)

I could be wrong, but I think that this is another TMBG Dunkin' Donuts commercial found on YouTube. I'd call it Karate!, but I won't make a page for it unless someone else agrees with me. ~Drew

It sounds like Flans to me. Unfortunately these commercials seem to get worse as we go along. --badqueso 01:53, 27 Jun 2006 (MDT)
I actually liked this one. But you're right, I didn't much like the Lunch Is Over one, which can also be found on YouTube. I still haven't seen or heard One Billion Degrees, so the jury's still out on that one. Now I'm going to take Badqueso's comment as agreement and make that Karate! page.
Oh, and I still wish someone would post high-quality audio rips for Lunch Is Over, One Billion Degrees, Karate!, and any other TMBG Dunkin' commercials that might be out there on the TMBW.Net MP3s page . . . ~Drew
