Trivia/Info
- This is a cover of the soul song "Yeh, Yeh", as recorded by Georgie Fame and the Blue Flames in 1964. The song was originally written as an instrumental by Rodgers Grant and Pat Patrick, and was first recorded by Mongo Santamaría in 1963. Jazz musician Jon Hendricks wrote lyrics for the tune in 1963 and recorded a version that same year with his group, Lambert, Hendricks & Bavan. Georgie Fame's 1964 recording became the song's best-known version and served as the basis for They Might Be Giants' cover. John Linnell discussed the song in a 2002 interview:
It appears that it was an instrumental before it was this Georgie Fame song. John Hendricks of Lambert, Hendricks & Ross made up words to an instrumental, which is something that that vocal group used to do. They would take a popular instrumental, or an unpopular instrumental, and make up crazy words to it, and I think this belongs in that category.
- This song was produced by Adam Schlesinger, and features Hearn Gadbois on percussion. Schlesinger discussed recording the song in a 2002 interview with Mix magazine:
It was kind of a big collage. It was done having the drummer play different grooves with different sized drums, different snares, and then chopping it up into pieces. It's very cut and paste. There's wild little moments - drums fills that come from nowhere, piano glisses and things. It's sort of patchwork. It was all done in Pro Tools. [It] actually really helps, when you're building on top of a track that has some programming in it, to have live percussion, just to mix it up.
- In 2018, John Flansburgh commented on the influence of French Yé-yé music on his song "This Microphone", and mentioned that the song title "Yeh Yeh" was probably derived from this style of music.[1]
- This song was featured in the 2001 Chrysler commercial "Parking Lot", and the 2012 tourist office commercial of the Dutch province Zeeland, "Land in Zee!"
