Talk:I Broke My Own Rule

From This Might Be A Wiki

Early listen[edit]

I listened to the start of this song about an hour after it went up on YouTube, since I was up really late last night. I'm not really sure why this was chosen as the A-side over I Lost Thursday. This one's not bad or anything, but the vocal line is super simple, and the lyrics can be absurd enough to sound almost like a parody. Then again, I didn't really like ILT nearly as much on the first listen either, so maybe this song will grow on me too. I'm still really excited for the album and into the "sound" that both of these songs have. --DoubleDenial (talk) 09:34, 1 June 2021 (EDT)

Kind of samey[edit]

... which is something I never thought I'd say about TMBG, ever. It's... ok, if simple, but it doesn't do much to separate itself from the other songs of the dial-a-song-era. Although parts do remind me alot of wearing a raincoat, and the lyrics have that nice nonsensicality I enjoy. <{[(lansburgh)]}> (talk) 09:54, 1 June 2021 (EDT)

EDIT: while still having it's faults, after listening to it a few times, it definitely starts to grow on me.

HARD GOING[edit]

A difficult song to listen to. Linnell's delivery is like that of an upset child and the jarring first verse becomes an endurance test to get onto the next part of the song. Two minutes in and I gave up. If this was deemed the lead track for the new album, one wonders what the rest are like. (Mr Tuck)

Despair[edit]

I haven't listened to it yet. I hoped that BOOK would sound something like I Haven't Been Right Yet. This isn't giving me any hope. I'm sad.

UPDATE: THIS SONG IS GREAT!! It's like a weird mix of When The Lights Come On, Jessica, Wearing A Raincoat, 9 Secret Steps, and I'm All You Can Think About, plus a hint of 90s piano vignettes! I'm very excited for BOOK now! Sorry for my negativity. It's good! --You&Me!! (talk) 08:27, 2 June 2021 (EDT)

Catchy[edit]

...Really, no love for this track on this page? It's nothing super-special for sure, but it's definitely catchy, and the use of rhythm on here is pretty fun. Snagwhag (talk) 11:18, 1 June 2021 (EDT)

I'm coming back to this page now, and it's kind of sad that a lot of slightly negative reception (and a little bit of very reception attention, cough cough) comes off as overwhelmingly negative. This song isn't bad in my opinion, but it is a little confusing as a single. Pessimistically I could say "If this is the best thing off of the album then we're doomed", but I don't think that's really how singles work so I'll refrain from that.
I feel like one of my least favorite things about this song is how pointless the lyrics are. Even if you hated I Lost Thursday, at least it was very clearly talking about something, and something topical at that. All I can get from this song is that the narrator "broke his own rule", "everything is wrecked", and he feels guilty but wants "freedom". Maybe "I lost the high ground" implies some kind of political meaning, but I doubt it. The most interesting thing about the lyrics to me is how both this song and Feel Good Sublet have a bridge in the middle of the song about climbing to the top of something and feeling free, but Linnell probably wasn't actually taking any cues from a 90s Flansburgh D-a-S track. Also, something about the repeating lyrics irritated me, and the ends of the verses all seem kind of unpolished and unsatisfying.
That was mostly nitpicking though. I like this song, just not as much as the last single or a lot of their songs. As I said before, I'm looking forward to the album itself :) --DoubleDenial (talk) 16:02, 1 June 2021 (EDT)

Better than I Lost Thursday[edit]

The melody is pretty simple (just a bunch of scales, essentially), but it manages to be super catchy nonetheless, and it's more memorable than I Lost Thursday. The lyrics are kind of unnecessarily repetitive, but there's some good lines such as the "Climb to the top..." part. Overall, a decent song. --ColorOfInfinity (talk) 19:31, 1 June 2021 (EDT)

Hey[edit]

I actually like ILT and IBMOR equally. Enough said. --The Mayor of Cowtown 22:06, 2 June 2021 (EDT)

y'all are being too hard[edit]

I like it! It's a solid Linnell bop, kind of reminiscent of The Else. I do prefer ILT, but this is a fine tune. C'mon guys, you're all being way too critical. It's a fine song and no different from your standard modern TMBG. --Mr. Klaw 16:33, 4 June 2021 (EDT)

Why the harshness?[edit]

Easily the best Linnell single off the album. Don’t understand the harshness, however flansburgh is way better with his singles so far. SorryForHittingYourEye (talk) 18:10, 26 October 2021 (EDT)

I hope drown the clown will be amazing --⇂⇂↋ suᴉɥsuǝZ ʎɯɯᴉᒋ (talk) 07:39, 27 October 2021 (EDT)
My expectations are as followed:

Songs that are already good

Songs that I expect to be super good

Songs that I expect to be good but I'm less excited for

Song that I guarantee you right now will be a bad song

But hey, who knows?--You&Me!! (talk) 08:14, 27 October 2021 (EDT)

Snowdon might be good, it seems like it may be a little fun, read the lyrics on Genius, I thought it was boring, but could be better. Synopsis has nothing there yet, and Brontosaurus plus Drown The Clown have something in common, ;) I'm not in the ifc, go to Genius.com --⇂⇂↋ suᴉɥsuǝZ ʎɯɯᴉᒋ (talk) 08:42, 27 October 2021 (EDT)
I'd rather not go to genius, i want to go into the album 67% blind.--You&Me!! (talk) 09:57, 27 October 2021 (EDT)
I'm 56% Blind, half the lyrics don't give me a good idea of what to expect. If Day felt weird until I looked it up, other songs have weird lyrical choices chosen just for the aesthetic, which adds things, but really the only song with this already has its lyrics Released --⇂⇂↋ suᴉɥsuǝZ ʎɯɯᴉᒋ (talk) 12:04, 27 October 2021 (EDT)

Dueling guitars[edit]

To my ears the electric guitars under the vocals are unamplified, with the same effect as on Upside Down Frown. One guitar is climbing the musical scale (matching the vocal melody) and the other is simultaneously descending. --Nehushtan (talk) 16:20, 5 December 2021 (EST)

Hard to memorize[edit]

I'm normally pretty good at memorizing and remembering lyrics after listening to songs, but the repetition and subtle changes in the lyrics for the longer lines have made this song so damn difficult to memorize. Love the song though so extra listens aren't a negative thing! -Elilupe
