Elegant Too
The Elegant Too consists of Mono Puff DJ Phil Hernandez and Skeleton Key guitarist Chris Maxwell. They are one of They Might Be Giants' most frequent collaborators. They have been featured on and remixed many TMBG tracks, and were even name-dropped in the intro of Mr. Xcitement.
Outside their work with TMBG, the Elegant Too frequently contributes music to advertisements and television. They remixed the song "Want You Gone" on Jonathan Coulton's 2011 album Artificial Heart, which was produced by John Flansburgh, and featured various other musicians who have collaborated with TMBG. They have also been the composers for Bob's Burgers since the second season,[2] a show created by Loren Bouchard who also created the shows Central Park and Home Movies, both series that have collaborated with TMBG.
Phil Hernandez talked about TMBG's influence on the band.[3]
We did a lot of work with [They Might Be Giants] at the very beginning, too. They helped get us our first break as far as learning how to do score more. Whey they got the Malcolm in the Middle gig, we helped them and do a bunch of cues writing for them and with them. Flansburgh would come over to Canal Street, and we would just bang out TV cues. He’d say, “We need a fight scene!” and literally have an egg timer and say, “Two minutes, we’ve got to come up with something like quick,” and we had a blast, and it was really fun. It was good to learn that way.
