- While introducing this song at a 1988 show at the Knitting Factory in New York, NY, John Linnell said: "I wrote this song about eight years ago, back when we were young and good."
- According to a 2009 interview with Rolling Stone, recording the song didn't require very many takes, despite its complexity. "I think this song was in our show for awhile before we recorded it. In general we try to learn the songs before the tape starts rolling to avoid embarrassment."
- Before 1989, "Letterbox" did not have an official title[1]. It was instead introduced by Linnell as "The Letterbox Song" during live performances.
