Trivia/Info

[John Flansburgh] just asked me if I wanted to sing on that song. They wanted a female voice, so that's how it happened. To be honest, I think it might have been written by John Linnell, now that I recall. But it could have been one of those things where they put it together. [...] I remember [recording the song] because I was out late the night before, and I always think that my voice sounds lower than its normal register, because I hadn't got a lot of sleep.
  • The "daddy sang bass" sample is from Johnny Cash's 1968 song "Daddy Sang Bass." The song was written by Carl Perkins, and released by Cash as a single from his 30th album The Holy Land. The sample is taken from the final repeat of the song's chorus.
  • Both John Flansburgh and John Linnell have sung this song live. In 1992, when it was part of the band's regular set, it was sung by Linnell. In most, if not all, performances since 1992, Flansburgh has sung it.
  • Most live performances and other recordings of this song feature a slight lyrical variation: "traces of your fingernails that run along the windows" (instead of 'windshield'). Flansburgh spoke about the lyric in a 2011 Tumblr post: "['Windows'] was the original lyric, and it just got shifted. I always thought it was better that the fingernails would run along side the passing car, not across the front."
  • On the double-tracked vocals in this song, Flansburgh has stated: "It is classic 80s delay (I'd assume a Lexicon PCM70, a unit we still use) set for very short delay so it's a very tight, un-blurry chorusing creating the double."
