Trivia/Info

  • The song was created in a collaborative way, with Flansburgh writing the lyrics and Linnell making the music and singing. When asked in a 1995 interview with 14850 Magazine Online if songs were created by trying to fit a set of lyrics to a specific melody, Flansburgh mentioned the song:

Subliminal was one of the tracks that we cooked up that way. It just had very simple words. It had two verses basically and the word subliminal as the primary part of the chorus. Again, that was one of the more devicee ways of doing it. By and large I think we write our songs in an old fashioned way. Our songs are pretty verse-chorus oriented.

  • When asked on the tmbg.com FAQ circa 1997 "What is the backwards message on Subliminal?" Flansburgh simply said: "It is not a message, just the vocal and drum track reversed." When asked the same question in a 1994 interview with Consumable Online, Flansburgh said: It's the vocals and the drums of the song, played backwards. When we were making the demos and fooling around, it sounded interesting, and we thought it fit in with the song.
  • The drums on this song are double-tracked, an approach suggested by Brian Doherty after hearing "Message of Love" by The Pretenders on the radio while driving to a recording session. He pitched the idea to Flansburgh first, who told him "This is a great idea. Just don't tell Linnell that this was inspired by a Pretenders song."[1]
