- "It's kind of our low-rent version of Free To Be You And Me" - Flans, during an interview on Fresh Air with Terry Gross.
- Avant-garde performance artist Captain Beefheart released a song called "Neon Meate Dream of a Octafish" on his 1969 album Trout Mask Replica. He was known for his absurdist lyrics and complex, demanding, almost non-musical songs. Both Johns are known fans of his work. TMBG would later reference him directly in the song "Definition Of Good" in 2015.
