Trivia/Info

  • John Flansburgh on the recording process of this song, in response to a Tumblr question on September 10, 2025:[1]
We were tracking in the studio yesterday, and working on a song called They Might Be Feral. We had a very complete demo with drums and keys and guitars so it was really about creating a bigger, polished production more than arranging a skeletal idea for a song. We rehearsed it a few days ago, and it seemed like we had it sorted, tracked it in the afternoon and it seemed like we were essentially done when Dan Miller pointed out that there were actually too many "scene changes" in the song (where the groove shifts to a different feel) and the individual parts were kind of working in opposition to one another in some big sections of the song. In other words—kind of fussy. We had time to check in with straightening things out, and sure enough simplifying it was a big improvement. I have to salute Dan for speaking his musical truth, because it really pulled things together.
  • Despite the pattern of the title, Flansburgh stated "It's not about us. It's not a take on They Might Be Giants. It's actually about... well, I don't want to reveal too much about my personal life."[2][3]
  • Upon being asked if the song was inspired by the second Trump administration on Tumblr, Flansburgh replied:
This is a bit awkward for me to sum up. I spend a lot of my time in a very rural part of the world, and the lyric of the song is a bit of a mediation on the most extreme folk I’ve run into. The simplest way I could explain it is that the lyric is from the point of view of someone who is trying very hard to connect all the dots in a sprawling complicated world, insisting that everything is inner-related (when it’s not) and being willful about those connections. And the “yes it’s a sign” refrain is kind of the end of the line in their reasoning, insisting on some kind of magical thinking to make up the difference when things simply don’t add up to them. I don’t want to place the song as simply anti-right wing, as some of these folk are as libertarian as they come, but I can say that a steady diet of private Facebook chatrooms and Fox News is not helping a lot of folk understand how to coexist.
