Talk:You Don't Like Me
Explain[edit]
Can someone who likes this song explain to me why they like it? I'm not trying to come off any certain way, im just curious because I think the song is pretty boring and not interesting. - Imboss5

- I like the song because it has a really nice melody, especially on the "From across a crowded room..." sections. --ColorOfInfinity (talk) 23:22, 12 March 2020 (EDT)
- I like the theme & the way Linnell inhabits the character. Also enjoy Marty Beller's performance. I don't skip this one. --Nehushtan (talk) 00:07, 13 March 2020 (EDT)
- It's certainly not a barnstormer. Linnell's lackluster vocals lead me to believe he wasn't fully invested in it, however much he might have "liked" the idea or character. The list-style song is of limited use or appeal in general, and I think he did it better with "Money For Dope", which is much livelier (at the very least). As for the instrumental backing, it gets the job done. The melody is OK, if somewhat standard for Linnell. None of it gets me over the hump of the fact that this is simply a below-average average tune from a guy who has written more than his fair share of masterpieces. Hey, it happens. --MisterMe (talk) 11:07, 13 March 2020 (EDT)
- It might have been so that they could end with a slow/gentle track on Join Us. --ColorOfInfinity (talk) 22:08, 13 March 2020 (EDT)

Total 180[edit]
I really didn't like this song when I first listened to it. I thought the lyrics were super basic and the instrumentation was lackluster compared to the rest of the album. But something in the back of my mind has been taking me back to this song again and again. I really enjoy this song now. The melody on the "I can hear the friendly words..." chorus sounds beautiful, and the instrumentation comes together in that section. The list sections are silly and probably word salad, but portray the message of the song really well. And it works as a closer. It almost feels like a bonus track that gets tacked onto the end of the album for the sake of it. (Which, ironically, is what I hate about the rereleases of The Spine and Mink Car, haha). But for an album like Join Us which is so well structured and flows so well from one song to another, its almost funny how bad of a closer it is. It works. "You Don't Like Me", you are almost literally meant to not like the song purely as a vibe killer. I've grown to appreciate the song quite a bit, its catchy and stupid. What's more to ask for?
Keep in mind I'm a huge Three Might Be Duende supporter, and it should probably have been the closer. And if we could have gotten Cave Fish on Join Us over this song I'd gladly sacrifice it. In fact, I bet a million dollars that this is the song TMBG ultimately chose over Cave Fish to include on the album. (IMO I'd have both songs on the album over Dog Walker lol). I think if this song was included on Album Raises or an IFC EP it'd be much more appreciated. I really enjoy it. --Robot Parade (talk) 17:17, 24 August 2024 (EDT)
