Trivia/Info

  • One of the first original They Might Be Giants songs. It was the first song they played at their first show, and an early demo of the song appeared on their first demo tape.
  • John Flansburgh explaining the origin of the song, from the 1995 Holiday Info Club newsletter:[1]
That song was written to incorporate a bunch of chords I had learned under the instruction of Jack DeSalvo, a guitarist I took lessons from in the early eighties. It was originally titled "I'll Remember 3rd Street" to reflect its jazzy origins, but once the recording was made with the spacey synth part its final title seemed more appropriate.
  • The title "I'll Remember 3rd Street" is also a reference to Flansburgh and Linnell's first New York apartment, which was located on 3rd Street in Park Slope, Brooklyn. The song was renamed to "Space Suit" possibly as early as 1983 and was introduced as such at a show in 1989.
  • John Flansburgh's vocals are layered with the accordion during the repeat of the main melody, though his voice is buried in the mix.[2]
