First show we've managed to get to in 7 years, it was great! The last one was at the El Rey also in L.A., down the street from the Wiltern. That one required a bus ride at the end of our train ride. This one was so much better - the subway station is right across the street from the Wiltern. Made it back to our hotel in Pasadena on the last train (should have used the restrooms at Union Station instead of waiting in the half-hour line after the show at the Wiltern!)
Amazing art deco venue, we had loge seats (lower balcony) but still felt pretty close. Nice banter, they seemed happy with the venue and the crowd was good, minus a couple of extra-loud yellers. The merch line was well-organized but moved so slowly that we had to leave before reaching the front. One of our group made a mad dash back to merch as soon as the intermission started and got us our tour shirts then. My wife and I, plus our oldest (grown) child and their best friend attended. For the friend it was a first TMBG show. We all had a great time. The backwards Sapphire Bullets was weird, hilarious and amazing. The friend was wearing a Doctor Worm venn diagram shirt and was thrilled when they finally played that as the last song of the night. Great horns - lots of noodling but also I felt they could have been a little higher in the mix on some of the songs they accompanied.
Flans had a false start on Hot Cha and cut if off quickly with a very obvious neck-cut motion to the rest of the band. Started again after an explanation, something like, the song is a train and if you don't get in at the right moment you're just not going to catch up. Amusing and relatable. I do find the laid-back, genuine workaday attitude on stage to be very endearing.
My kid swears they saw an attendee wearing a shirt that had the jet engine from the album cover of Superfueled Freaksicle that I designed, but didn't mention it until later so I didn't see it and can't confirm. One of you folks??

I hadn't been to a show in so, so long, so this was a real treat! I was astonished at how good Stillub had gotten, that was really impressive. A few people took pictures of me in my BOOTY glasses, so if that was you - hi!
I don't usually take my phone out at concerts, but I did just to write down some of my favorite Johns banter:

JF: “Tattoos on tattoos.”
JL: “There’s a French name for that.”
JF: “It’s called ‘regrets’.”

JF: “In Florida textbooks you cannot use the word ‘euphonium’ any more, they call them ‘tubas’, which is bullshit.”

JL: “The sun is so large a million Neil Sedakas could fit inside. And yet, paradoxically, the sun is not as big a star as Neil Sedaka.”

JF: “I have a hard time reading crowds, but I don’t think they came here for a shitty show, John.”

JL: “It’s like French, adding an e makes the article feminine?”
JF: “The only word I know in French is regrets.”
