Trivia/Info
This track takes us deeper into the Memphis groove than the band has ever been before. The song is about a slightly sleazy couple with a tenuous relationship to each other and a suspect relationship to the world.
- John Flansburgh would further elaborate on the song's subject matter in a 1997 interview:
On [Factory Showroom], I wrote this song called "Pet Name" that really started out with the same intention [of writing] a straight love song. And halfway through that I just... I chickened out. It's about a troubled, misstepped kind of relationship. And it's an interesting topic, it's got a little bit more friction in it.
- The Long Winters' cover of "Pet Name" is the second track on Hello Radio: The Songs Of They Might Be Giants.
- During live performances of "Pet Name", all the lights are turned off.
