- On an interview with the podcast EarWax, John Linnell revealed that unlike Roman Songs which were originally written in English and later translated, this song was written directly in French with phrases that he was aware of:
I'd been trying to learn French on Duolingo. When I wrote the song, that was currently what I was working on. There were a couple of phrases where I was like, "Oh, that's really great." I can't remember where "je n'en ai pas" came from, but that came up. Our guitar player often uses this expression where he says "I've got nothing" when he's about to open his mouth and say something, and then he's perfectly silent.
- Linnell spoke about the song in a 2026 interview with The Spill Magazine:
The impulse was to come up with something that is different than everything else. It is much more punk rock, and we have never done a song in French. I'm not fluent in French at all, but I am working on it... I liked certain phrases, and "je n'en ai pas" was one of them. It just means "I don't have any." The phrase "I've got nothing" comes up a lot. I think in English, when we are trying to express some idea, and then when we just run out of things to say, that's just this phrase that comes up. The song is maybe a little bit of a reflection of The Beatles' song "Michelle".
- This is the first song sung entirely in a language other than English to feature on a They Might Be Giants studio album. Other songs sung in a non-English language, such as "Greek Number Three" and "O Tannenbaum", had only been featured on compilations or EP releases.
- French was also used for the Nanobots song "Stone Cold Coup D'État", notably for lyrics such as "It has that certain je ne sais quoi".
- This is the second TMBG song with a French title, the first was the Indestructible Object song Au Contraire, later released on The Spine.
