Trivia/Info
- The line "I've got a match: your embrace and my collapse" is a play on words of the exchange, "Got a match?" and taunting response, "Yeah, your face and my ass".
- Flansburgh wrote of this song on Tumblr in 2011, "That is one of the few songs that we got so burned out on that I doubt we'll ever play it again. We've probably played many more since, but early on in touring it was like an introduction to playing a song too much." Along with "You'll Miss Me" and "The World's Address", this was one of three songs not played at TMBG's Lincoln album shows in 2011-12. The other two were played at an album show in 2015, but this song has remained unplayed since 1989.
- In 2024, when a TikTok live viewer asked if the band would ever play the song live again, Flansburgh said "That's really up to John Linnell. We played it a lot and I think he got a little sick of it. And when we get sick of songs we just kinda pull them out of the show and just wait. He might come around to it, but, you know, it's really up to him."
- An alternate lyric present in an early live performance of the song was "I'll take the lust from the coffee in my coffee mug", which was changed sometime in late-1987.
- During live performances of "Ana Ng," John Flansburgh has been consistently singing "I don't want the world, I just want your half" to the tune of this song's "Love people are there, the smell of love is everywhere" since 1996.
