The issue of Sandman that references this song has to do with a witch summoning the moon out of the sky. This has the unintended effect of seriously messing up the tides, causing a tidal wave to hit New York-almost sinking Manhattan. I am not making this up. - An Anonymous Contributor

How!!!!!

How can this have only been played once! I realise that it may have been played in early days and this might have been lost, but we can be sure that since the 90s it's not been played. Staggering. I mean how many times have they played that Planet of the Apes guff! This song is in every serious Giant fans top 10 songs by the band. I'd love to hear an explanation. Don't they like it? (Mr Tuck)

It's apparently been around since 1986, but that's only if you believe in the story of the 1986 Demo Tape, which some think is a hoax. Do any live recordings from 1986 even exist? A whole year of TMBG live performances gone to waste. And do you really think that they're ever going to bring it back? Think of how many other songs have been played only a few times, especially considering how many songs they have. Songs from their early days like When It Rains It Snows, For Science, and The World's Address, as well as songs from later on like Lullaby to Nightmares and The Bells Are Ringing. And think of all the songs that they've never even played live like Broke in Two and Feign Amnesia. And think of how many songs they haven't played in like 20 years like Extra Savoir-Faire. I have a whole Word document AND Excel spreadsheet devoted to this, which is how I'm able to pull so many examples without minutes of research.

The reason why Nightgown has only been played once is sadly because they'd rather play Birdhouse or Istanbul over a thousand times. And because I doubt they'll ever do a Miscellaneous T show. But you'd be delighted to hear that the most one of those Planet of the Apes songs has been played (besides Battle of course) has been three, and I hope they don't bring THOSE back. No, there were three songs from the album that they will likely never play live again: You'll Miss Me, The World's Address, and I've Got a Match. But they brought back (presumably) Stand On Your Own Head which is cool. My only request would be to play Pencil Rain at least one more time so that it would have been played 20 times live and no longer be considered by me to be a song that they haven't played live that many times. - invisiblehippo97 11:34, 17 July 2015 (CST)

I asked Flans about this one specifically once many years ago, and he said it just wasn't that fun to play. And from his point of view it makes perfect sense - if there's even a guitar part at all (I hear only two organ parts, synth bass and drums), it's not a very interesting one. As much as I agree with you that the Planet of the Apes songs got old after a while, they were full of energy, and Flans got to do what he really loves, which is hamming it up for the audience. -L (talk) 11:48, 27 July 2015 (EDT)

it was some 1995 show. my guess was that originally someone saw "moon" and assumed this song when it should have been destination moon, which befits a 1995 show. we changed it a couple years ago. -- 02:12, 12 July 2022 (EDT)
