Category talk:Songs

This new organization seems somewhat cumbersome. What if we were to make each of the letters its own sub-category of the Category:Songs ? Does anybody else besides me have an issue with navigating to songs at the far end of the alphabet? -BigJohn

Hmm. Now the Songs (Solo Projects) page (I can't figure out how to show its link here) isn't navigable from this page like it used to be. It's a separate category, but you can only get to it by looking at the master Category list or looking at songs you find through search. Any suggestions? -BigJohn

I'm not sure why, but that happened when we upgrade to 1.4.7 (i believe). You have to go to the "S" page, to get the solo projects sub-cat to show up. I don't know if it's a bug or a feature, so when we upgrade to 1.5, we'll see what happens. Also, if you want to link to a category, put a colon in front of the word category, like this: :Category:Solo Projects --Duke33 17:10, 13 Jan 2006 (EST)

That's how mediawiki handles subcategories. To get it to show them on the front page, you need [[Category talk:Songs| ]] instead of [[Category talk:Songs]] on the category pages - but then it won't show up under S. It might make sense to have Songs (Solo Projects) as [[Category talk:Songs|Solo Projects]], which will still be under S, but it'll be there for the right reason :-) Percy Snoodle 12:42, 15 Jan 2006 (EST)

Title, The

Is there a rhyme or reason why song titles beginning with "the" are filled under "T?" Normal standards for alphabetization call for the article to be added to the end of the song title after a comma. I.e. "Edison Museum, The" should be filled under "E." TheCerealPoet

The thing to ask is who is filling in the song titles in this way. The answer-- the wiki's internal alphabetical-title-organizing-- explains why. And explains why nothing can be done about it except to go into every "The __" song and edit the way it's named in the categories. Back a few years ago for the convenience of the alphabetical listing, we had the actual pages called, for instance, "Bells Are Ringing, The." I think consensus was that this was ugly and unnecessary. In our own wikian-edited lists (see any Song Theme page) though, we alphabetize titles according to the "normal standards." ~ magbatz 01:00, 26 February 2009 (UTC)

New to the site...noticed that songs are ranked based on visitors votes (totally interesting), but there doesn't seem to be a listing of song rankings! I was interested in knowing what's #1...

Alphabetization is confused

What's with the alphabetization? Songs starting with any random letter are in different Letter groups. And what's the "%" category? -BigJohn

Yes, it's odd to find "The Car Crash" spotted under "L." But I think it's just a wiki problem, I don't know if there's a way to fix it.

Yes - I ran refreshLinks.php, which took care of it. I'm not sure why MediaWiki gets "confused" like that sometimes...but it's not a big deal to fix usually. --Duke33 19:01, 6 April 2009 (UTC)

Maintenance scripts don't run well from cronjobs, unfortunately. I've tried. There's a bug with the "Icon" extension, which is causing a problem with refreshLinks.php right now. I'll see what i can do though. --Duke33 19:58, 16 December 2009 (UTC)

The "R" category is also messed up. After the last "R" song, it starts listing from "A" and on until the page ends.

I know we have on on going problem with the alphabetization of songs, but right now it is working nearly perfectly. Except for the letter "R". That is the only letter currently hosting a mass of non-alphabetical songs (though the ones that don't begin with "R" do appear to be in alphabetical order). Any particular reason for this last remaining glitch? Or is it just same-old, same-old and we just have to live with it? --BlueCanary 01:52, 9 June 2012 (EDT)

I dug into it more, and for the first time in years, I have a lead as to what is going on. These pages get cached, and then runJobs.php fixes links, etc. Well, it's using the "r" from "runJobs.php" as the page sort key for some reason. Missing songs and wrongly listed songs in the Songs letter sections

I can't find the song "Seven" in the Songs listings. It's not listed under "S", and (of course) it's not listed under "7". But I don't know how to fix this.

I also can't find the song "I Never Go To Work" in the Songs listings. It's not under "I", nor is it under "N" (though "Never Go To Work" redirects to "I Never Go To Work"). It seems that "Seven Days of the Week" should also redirect to "I Never Go To Work".

Hmmm, looking further, I see "I Am A Paleontologist" isn't listed under "I". Nor is "Science Is Real" listed under "S", etc.

And looking back at that "S" section, why are "Asheville" and "Narrow Your Eyes", etc. listed there?

I tried to find "Meet The Elements" in the "M" section, and it's not there -- but next to "Meet James Ensor" I found "Where Your Eyes Don't Go"! The second song in the "M" section is "Put Your Hand Inside The Puppet Head".

Lots of messes! Anyone know how to fix these?

Are different lyrics different songs

As in, do I need to use the song template to create a new song, where there's a version with different lyrics (the live version of Marty Beller Mask, for example, is different) --Chiasmus 03:52, 01 November 2011 (EDT)

I'm pretty sure that when this occurs with live versions the answer is generally no, unless the live version sees an official release somewhere. If the lyrics of live versions are consistently different, then it's probably worth making a note on the original page, but if it was just a goof, then I don't think anything would be necessary. -Apollo (colloquia!) 09:06, 1 November 2011 (EDT)

Editing

I tested a few songs using the template because for most songs that have multiple versions (i.e., "Edit", "Live", "Demo") the entry for the "main" studio album version wasn't showing up in the list. When I used the template and put the song title in (i.e., Particle Man), the template updated with all the correct and relevant information (so the page is already created), and then it showed up in the list for that session. Next time I opened the Wiki and logged in, however, those songs no longer show up. What kind of bug would cause that to happen? -CJSF

Burnice

I feel like I'm going crazy, but I know that a song named, "Burnice" was released in one of the weekly IFC emails. Pretty sure there was a video, too. Now I can't find a single thing about the song nor can I locate the video! I have proof in my Amazon music, because I downloaded the mp3 as soon as it came out! I also just tried to add the song to the songs list-along with the lyrics (as I hear them), but now those pages have disappeared! Anyone know anything about this mysterious situation? lol Thanks!

A noble effort, but I'm not sure how useful it is when one takes into account the fact that the ratings list is a very unstable thing. It's constantly shifting as new songs are released and old songs are newly rated--I have the experience all the time of just my own individual rating of a song that doesn't have too many ratings yet making it jump up the chart like 20 spots. So unless you're planning to go to all the effort of constantly checking the ratings and constantly revising the playlist, it's not actually going to reflect the current ratings. --Self Called Nowhere (talk) 17:10, 26 May 2021 (EDT)
