For me, it was interesting to write something that was kind of that down. It wasn't intentional. I was trying to figure out how to do something that was just simple. And I think the combination of a really unadorned arrangement and a very direct kind of sentiment added up to something that seemed much more intense than I was intending.
- Flansburgh described the inspiration for the line mentioning the trumpeter swan in a Tumblr post[2]:
The direct inspiration in Sometimes is to a EB White story called The Trumpet of the Swan, which is about Louis, a trumpeter swan who has no voice. The book is lesser known that [sic] Charlotte's Web and Stuart Little but resides in a similar magical animal/human reality as those famous stories. It has been a very long time since I read it so it feels more like a dream now, but that was the reference.
