Rough Mixes From Apollo 18
Rough Mixes is a 1991 internal cassette tape containing unreleased rough mixes of songs from They Might Be Giants' fourth album Apollo 18, along with an unheard recording of "I Miss Side 2" and an instrumental version of "Hall of Heads". Its existence was unknown until two copies were sold on eBay in May 2026.[1] [2]
Background[edit]
Production on Apollo 18 likely began soon after Flood's release, as some drum machines present on Flood are also heard on some of these recordings. Other than the demo of "Mammal", which was made available through Podcast 43 in 2011, all recordings are unique to this tape. The cassettes' original owner, who eventually sold them on eBay in 2026, worked in the music industry as a promoter and was gifted the tapes by TMBG's management in the early '90s, who were aware that he was a fan.
