Trivia/Info

  • An early version of "Mammal", first made publicly available in 2011 through Podcast 43. Rather than a typical demo, this recording could be more accurately described as a work-in-progress version of the final studio recording. It features the same lead and backing vocal tracks as the finished song, as well as the same bass synth part, and a very similar drum part.
  • The musical arrangement of this track closely resembles the final song, but includes some notable differences:
    • Instead of transitioning into an instrumental break after the first chorus, the first half of the bridge is sung ("Placental the sister of her brother Marsupial").
    • The drum track follows the same pattern as the final version, but uses some different drum sounds and is mixed significantly louder. A one-bar count-in is also present at the beginning of the song.
    • John Flansburgh's guitar parts are absent.
    • The keyboard has a different tone and a simpler, more basic performance.
    • The bass is mixed mono, rather than being spread across the stereo field.
  • A slightly different version of this recording was featured on Dial-A-Song in the early 1990s. That version might predate this one, as it includes an alternate lead vocal take with a different lyric. The instrumentation appears to be identical in both early versions.
