Trivia/Info
- This song is based on Langston Hughes' 1951 poem "Motto." The full poem reads:
I play it cool And dig all jive. That's the reason I stay alive. My motto, As I live and learn, is: Dig And Be Dug In Return.
- John Flansburgh described the song in a 1998 press release: "A love song and a list song combined. The lyric in the chorus quotes a poem by Langston Hughes." Introducing the song at a 1998 show, Flansburgh elaborated: "This next song is about love. Someone once said 'learning to love yourself is the greatest love of all,' which is a really weird sentiment. That's not what this next song is about. This next song is about loving other people."
- The liner notes of It's Fun To Steal credit Flansburgh, Hal Cragin, Steve Calhoon and Phil Hernandez as writers of this song.
