This song was written by the author Jonathan Lethem, along with a few other songs "written sporadically over the past twenty years." He recently posted the lyrics of this and the other songs written by him on his website for his Promiscuous Materials Project, in which he offers up song lyrics or titles and others perform and record them. In doing so, he is trying to break down ownership of the intellectual property that is the song, and raise questions of authorship. More about the project can be found at his website.
