So if Marty is the new drummer, what happened to Dan? Is he still in the band? - Random
It seems to me that Marty does the stuff for the Other Thing. In the credits on Indestructible Object, it says that Dan played on Au Contraire and Memo To Human Resources, the "previews" for The Spine. Although, Marty did play on Bed, Bed, Bed (Book) and Am I Awake?, so maybe Dan is getting replaced... but, then AGAIN, whenever John tells us that They're going "on tour with the band", it's usually with Dan. In my mind, I see Mr. Hickey being more like a member of TMBG, and Mr. Beller being more of a guest guy. - Doctor Masonstein
According to Dot, Scragz is right. Dan has left the group. - FrankEinstein
Well, I'll miss Dan... but maybe Marty will know/learn different old songs, like Mr. Me and Ant and etc. A different repertoire of older songs would be Damn Good Times. - Doctor Masonstein
DAN HAS LEFT THE GROUP????!!!! Now I can't just prattle off Their names when my friends ask me, "What? Who's There Might Be Giants?" (Seriously, that's what they call Them.) I'm really good at just saying, very quickly so they can't understand me, "Dan, John, Dan, John, Dan." It just doesn't flow with "Dan, John, Marty, John, Dan." *GASPS* Wait, there won't be any Band of Dans! NOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!! Aurora Hawthorne
Look on the bright side, their names make a palindrome.-Augie
Any word on why Dan left? He always seemed a bit... quirky to me, although I will miss the triple Dan. - Nat
Marty IS cute, though. XD --33marzi
Hmmm. You know, I hate to say it, but I think we may be missing the bigger picture here. Dan Hickey didn't leave the group like it's being suggested; he couldn't leave it because he was never *in* it. You see? They Might Be Giants has been and always will be John Linnell and John Flansburgh. Period. The nature of their current act requires that they hire complementary players, and no matter how long or even beneficial working with those players may be, they're still, in truth, just hired guns. I mean, be reminded that the music industry is rife with musicians that make a very fine living recording, touring and such, and they aren't in a band; they sell their services to others. And it is in the nature of these musicians eventually to move on to other projects. Before the Band of Dans (a name given them by TMBG; my understanding is that the 3 Dans were not a codified unit prior to being hired by the Johns), there was Graham Maby and Brian Dougherty, there was Eric Schermerhorn hired for Factory Showroom (which was Flans' introduction to removing himself from lead guitar duties), it goes on and on. Call me a purist or whatever, but when I tell people who are They Might Be Giants, it is John and John, and that's it. Regarding Marty, I have confidence in his abilities because I have confidence in the Johns' know-how in hiring talent, as evidenced by past selections. I'll certainly miss Hickey - he was their best drummer to date - but I think part of the John's successes over the past 10 years has been stirring up new blood as time passes, whether it be with their backing band or their producers or whatever. - Charlie
Does anyone else think Marty looks vaguely like Quentin Tarantino? -Fan Of Marty
Is it mere coincidence that Marty is the Beller for Shoehorn With Teeth with the Other Thing? bj
Hm. Good point. --33marzi
I am really impressed with Marty. He and his wife are awesome at choosing baby names. ~ magbatz 01:48, 30 January 2008 (UTC)
