Holy crap, a Metallica reference! --badqueso 17:03, 31 May 2006 (CDT)

Boo for slow dial-up internet. I would so help transcribe this stuff, but it won't be downloaded for like three hours. --Valerie 17:04, 31 May 2006 (CDT)

This must mean the new newsletter is on its way too! Excellent! -Cronny

Yeah, it's long, but I don't really like it all that much. I don't know why. It just... engh. It's not their best quality stuff, but I gotta admit there is a lot of it --ArAn 18:55, 31 May 2006 (CDT)

Could use more new stuff. --Briguyd 18:58, 31 May 2006 (CDT)
I agree. I understand that they are on tour, though. I just wish that they had some more original podcast only songs. Am I Awake? is and always will be an awesome song, though. I've never seen "Resident Life" but I saw the opening for it. Wow. I fell in love with this song. I like how dark it sounds with the deep synth and reverse sounds. --ArAn 19:07, 31 May 2006 (CDT)
Yeah, they kind of ditched the 'obscurities' angle for this edition of the podcast. The meat of it was four songs that have already been widely released.

Is this really 100kbps per second? My computer has it as 99. --Valerie 19:50, 31 May 2006 (CDT)

It's called variable bit rate for a reason. :) -CapitalQtalk ♪ 20:13, 31 May 2006 (CDT)

Does anyone have any info on this "Stu Mitchell" guy, previewed at the end of Podcast 7B? - pnihill2000 20:21, 31 May 2006 (CDT)

He was an experimental artist from the 60's. I guess they liked the song or something. --liam 20:21, 31 May 2006 (CDT)

Hmmm... do you have a link or something for more info on him. I got nothing on Wikipedia. Yeah, for some reason I really liked that song...- --pnihill2000 20:21, 31 May 2006 (CDT)

I know nothing about him. I also liked the song and did a google search and this thread showed up. So I did some more searches and apparently the only song he ever released was that on a couple compilations. But if you like that type of music I found this weird podcast with that song. --liam 20:52, 31 May 2006 (CDT)

There isn't any unreleased stuff after Cecil says there are, is there, er, are there? --Valerie 20:00, 31 May 2006 (CDT)

Demoray Parcum

Hmmm...I hear "Demarais Parker" - Although, it's being pronounced "Deh-bo-ray". Anyone else with me on that? --Duke33 07:24, 1 Jun 2006 (CDT)

I, too, thought it might be "Demarais Parker" pronounced with a long A at the end of Deborah (making it "Deh-buh-RAY") so that it rhymed with "no way." Could be wrong, though. (Is anyone sure enough either way to make a page for it, or are we waiting until we--hopefully--see it in writing somewhere?) ~Drew

I heard, "Debra Ray Parker." [~Christina Miller, June 2005]

I changed it to Demarais Parker for the time being...I think at the very least, it's definitely not Demoray Parcum...You're right Christina, she could have a middle name, although seeing as how it's probably a girl's name, it might be "Rae" instead of "Ray". I went to the cd101 website, and they didn't have any info. --Duke33 21:14, 1 Jun 2006 (CDT)

Untitled Remix

"And some dusty, crusty tracks from They Might Be Giants' Iron Mountain Vaults, we heard a little bit of the Gloria recordings that was featured in edited form on the Don't Let's Stop [sic] EP back in the 1980s, from Bar/None Records."

I'm a little confused, is this new, or was this version actually taken as-is from an old EP? I am wondering if it's the version from the Don't Let's Start (EP) - Elektra 7" Re-Issue...but that would have been on Elektra, not Bar-None. Anyone have this old record, and can verify? --Duke33 07:54, 1 Jun 2006 (CDT)

It's a completely new remix, Cecil was just referencing the Untitled recording on the DLS EP, since both originate from the same phone conversation. Untitled is an edited-down version of the phone recordings. -CapitalQtalk ♪ 14:25, 1 Jun 2006 (CDT)
I agree with CapitalQ, except for two things:
  1. Untitled was never on the "Don't Let's Stop" (aka Don't Let's Start) EP (other than the Elektra 7" Re-issue)--it was on the (She Was A) Hotel Detective EP. So I think the whole "Don't Let's Stop" reference was an outright mistake, whether intentional or a slip of the tongue. You have to admit that there have been several of these types of mistakes in podcast patter so far.
  2. By definition, is it really a remix? My impression was that the words are an unedited (not remixed) portion of the recording of Gloria's message and the background music is different (not remixed) background music. What does everyone else think? Is the background music really similar enough to have come from the same original music mixed differently? (I haven't really compared them--this is just the impression I get. I'll have to listen to both and compare later.) ~Drew
It's not a remix at all, it's just pieces of the huge (probabaly 15+ mins) Gloria conversation with some music added. What should it be named? -CapitalQtalk ♪ 18:02, 1 Jun 2006 (CDT)
I'm not sure. I'll think about it. ~Drew
You guys are being too literal. I mean, what remixes do you know of that actually have the same instrumental panned differently or something? It is a remix. --liam 18:14, 1 Jun 2006 (CDT)

Whoops

Until I listened to this podcast... yep, all this time... I mixed up the voices of the two Johns. I thought Flansburgh had the deeper voice and always pictured him singing songs like Ana Ng and all this time it was Linnell! What a twit I feel.

-Vixus (I shouldn't have put my name down.)

Haven't you seen videos like, They'll Need A Crane or Birdhouse In Your Soul? Because they show Linnell singing those songs. - CuppaCoffee
You're not a twit! A natural mistake. I had two albums before it became apparent to me. I was sure, looking at the two men, the deeper singing voice had to be coming out of the bigger chest, and the high sweet sounds as in Istanbul must be the slender guy. Which is backwards, because Mr. Flansburgh can sing in a low register (In It Never Fails, for instance, he is both the tenor and the baritone parts), but if you want really deep and smooth, Mr. Linnell is better. Mr. Linnell cannot sing well in a higher register, I believe, but navigates Whistling In the Dark handily. I was completely dead sure that Whistling in the Dark was Mr. Flansburgh. Nope, he was the one hitting those beautiful high warbles in Istanbul. Go figure.
[Christina Miller, October 2006]
Yeah. It wasn't until I really got into TMBG that I could differentiate the voices. "I was sure, looking at the two men, the deeper singing voice had to be coming out of the bigger chest, and the high sweet sounds as in Istanbul must be the slender guy." That's exactly, word for word, what I thought. And I was dead wrong. I just like to think: Big John - high voice. Little John - deep voice. The contrast is so uncanny and bewildering, I can't help but remember it. - Overjoy
(LOL) Now we've totally confused people who haven't learned the differences between the voices! Best to just check the wiki for which guy wrote it! He probably sang it if he wrote it. But not always. *grimace* Sorry. :/ [~Christina Miller, January 2007]
