Studio 360
Studio 360 was a PRX public radio program hosted by Kurt Andersen which ran from 2000 until 2020.
In the July 5, 2003 episode entitled "Castles, Mermaid, Giants," Andersen spent the day at Coney Island in Brooklyn, NY with John Linnell and John Flansburgh. The segment featured interviews with the Johns and a few songs relating to the beach, including "Idlewild" which references Coney Island's former Steeplechase Park. The band was accompanied by TMBG Mini-Brass.
Multiple recordings from the session went on to find eventual releases on future TMBG projects. The performance of "Caroline, No" was released the following year on the Indestructible Object EP, "No Plan B" and "Metal Detector" came out on Cast Your Pod To The Wind, and "Boat Of Car" was released on Album Raises New And Troubling Questions.
In 2025, TMBG described the appearance in an Instant Fan Club newsletter:
In 2003, we had the pleasure of appearing on Kurt Anderson’s radio show Studio 360. We all piled in to the Coney Island Museum and recorded some summery songs, along with an actual chat outside with Kurt.
The 2025 download featured in the Instant Fan Club included an additional song recorded at the session, "No Plan B," as an instrumental. The song's original lyrics mentioned the beach, in line with the episode's themes.
