Talk:Why Did You Grow A Beard?

From This Might Be A Wiki

What do we reckon this is then? A demo/rejected demo from the new album, maybe? It doesn't sound immediately like something knocked up for a podcast (like all the others did), more a rough sketch of a song idea. The speculation starts here! ~ SirDarrell

My theory is that this more "left field" material gets rejected these days as Flans strives for commercial success. This is a great song, the lyric "Animals rule this land" is wonderful and it's genuinely exciting. Reminds me of the first two albums when they would always have material like this on. Now - we have to put up with a couple of MOR Flans ballads instead whilst the good stuff gets pushed aside. (Mr Tuck)

Much like It Was A Very Good Year or I Enjoy Being A Boy... -Ecks

I'm sorry, but I think this song would be better if they had a cuss word in there. I think the lyrics should go "What the Christ? What the F---?" (This would of course not be the first time they used the f-word. That's just my opinion, though.) --ArAn 01:19, 11 Feb 2006 (CST)

Uuh, no. The day that They release an album with a "Parental Advisory: Explicit Lyrics" sticker on it is the day that I am found dangling at the end of a rope made out of TMBG t-shirts. -TDK 09:14, 11 Feb 2006 (CST)

Well, I mean, not for album release, but maybe when they play it live or something. --ArAn 12:52, 11 Feb 2006 (CST)

Not that I think tmbg MUST use cuss in their music, but the day that They start making rules for what They should and shouldnt say and do, is the same day that They stop being a band that is taking music to the next level of originality. Additionally, in my opinion, using the word Christ as an exclamation in this song makes the song sound SO weak. ~ Anklepants

I think Linnell sounds just a little bit unnatural when he cusses. I dunno, it just reminds me of some little kid who only cusses because he's trying to be cool or something... Not that when Linnell cusses he's trying to be cool, it just reminds me of that. -Oreosarecrack 7:51, 17 May, 2006 (CST)

Nice to know I'm not the only one. The song has an overly jokey vibe and using "Christ" rather than "hell" or "fuck" pushed it over the edge for me. A rare TMBG song that crosses over into "too silly." --72.224.150.233 23:31, 24 May 2006 (CDT)

I don't know. Personally, I think the use of both "Christ" and "Devil" makes a lot more lyrical sense than having one of them be a curse word. And I'm surprised at the overwhelmingly negative response to "what the christ?". I actually thought it was rather funny, and not too silly or soft or anything. I wouldn't have a problem with TMBG cursing at all, and to me it didn't sound like Linnell was censoring himself at all...though I do think that an overall angrier vocal might help...but nonetheless, I really like this song ^^ - Stiddy 24 June, 2006

Where's the synthesized voice?

It's the same as Through Being Cool All over, just not heavily done. -Ecks

Speaking of profanity, should this song be listed in the "Swear Words" song category? I think "What the Christ?" is considered something of a swear. Any thoughts? -Martorano

Yes, I agree that for a lot of people--including me--this is an example of profanity. ~Drew
