Talk:Shows/1986-01-15

From This Might Be A Wiki

Hi! Was wondering how you came to the conclusion that the Flansquote from Tumblr was referring to this show? Flans also mentioned that they were supposed to open for Cale at Electriques but I'm not sure if you've found anything that proves otherwise or not. - Mrsomebodyelse (talk) 00:03, 26 June 2025 (EDT)

According to Linnell (per an email to tmbw, i guess) the 1984 Montreal show was cancelled, so Flansburgh must've been describing this 1986 one when he wrote, "I do remember finding the dressing rooms very unprivate," etc. He can't be referring to the dressing room at a show that never happened. What's the source for the claim that the 1984 gig was with Cale anyway? The cited listing in Flash doesn't mention him. --Batwho (talk) 02:26, 26 June 2025 (EDT)
It was mentioned by Flans when the date was given to TMBW, although when writing this I was thinking with a perspective that they might've turned up at the show only for it to be cancelled, but knowing that TMBG's played shows with only 9 people in the venue it seems very unlikely that would've happened. There was also no source that I knew of that mentioned Cale in the 1984 gig apart from Flans so I was wondering if you had found something. - Mrsomebodyelse (talk) 05:10, 26 June 2025 (EDT)
Hmm makes me wonder if Flansburgh conflated the 2 Canada shows when submitting it. Like, "this was our first show in Canada, must've been the one with John Cale." Here's a 2nd listing for the 1984 gig, which again mentions TMBG but not Cale. It isn't hard proof but it'd be odd for 2 different listings to both name just the obscure opener instead of the wellknown headliner. I'm gonna presume from this that Cale wasn't involved, but I'd be curious if JF or JL had anything to say about it when they offered the dates. --Batwho (talk) 09:34, 26 June 2025 (EDT)
