Talk:I Am Invisible

From This Might Be A Wiki

Innocuous Stuff[edit]

Almost a solo effort from Linnell. Obviously worked out in his home studio. Sounding like a Paul McCartney Wings demo, it's a rather middle of the road ditty. The vocal walks the fine line of being in and out of tune (on the higher parts). Which suggests Linnell was working with one eye on the clock. I can see why it wasn't considered for Glean, maybe a filler track on the next kids album? It's a hard song to actively dislike, but I'm not sure I really like it either. One wonders what it would sound like if performed on an accordion...(Mr Tuck)

Kind of an invisible song? -Ash
An invisible song would be silent though Ash? Lol. I'm trying to think what the song reminds me of? Anyone have any ideas? Distressingly few comments on this song. (Mr Tuck)
It does remind me of another song, and it's driving me batty that I can't remember which one! But, yeah, it's almost definitely meant for the kids album (along with "Thinking Machine," "Mrs. Wheelyke," and possibly even "The Velvet Ape"). That may explain the lack of many comments; if, as expected, all of the kids album tracks end up on DAS Direct, that means a good percentage of the stuff from here on out will be on the kids album, and since a lot of fans (certainly not the majority, but a considerable number) don't particularly care for the kids stuff, they may have started tuning out. I hope that's not the case, though!
I think some of the best tunes have been the kids songs: Fibber Island, Four of Two, Sleepwalkers, Violin (I know!!!), House at the Top of the Tree; C is for Conifers; Flying V (which I adore!); My Brother the Ape are great. (Mr Tuck)

The Child's Perspective[edit]

All of the above comments are well and good. However, let's look at this from a child's point of view--even an older child, between 8-12. They won't have any idea of what other TMBG song this might sound like, or whether it's slightly off-key or "middle of the road", or whether the band felt rushed in making it, etc., etc. They won't be thinking of the darker sides of invisibility, explored in H. G. Wells' The Invisible Man or all its spinoffs in various media through the years, either. They'll simply revel in the joy of imagining themselves being invisible and going around doing all the silly things kids might do in those circumstances. And in that respect, this song is a great success. Do yourselves a favor and turn off the music critic in your mind and listen to this song like you were a kid again. I think I can do that. Hence my above list of great kids songs that Giants have produced. However, this isn't a great song, be it for kid or adult. It's a filler. I'm not entirely sure that this is even slated as a release for the kids album. Compare it to the tracks on NO! and it would be the worst song on the album. (Mr Tuck)
Notice I said kids "won't have any idea of what other TMBG song this might sound like", and yet you went right ahead and had to compare it to stuff from 13 years previous. Young listeners to this song wouldn't even have been born when No! was released. So much for turning off the music critic, eh tuck? ;-) --MisterMe (talk) 00:12, 10 May 2021 (EDT)

Linnell-by-numbers[edit]

This song isn't bad or anything like that, I may even agree that it's *almost* filler, but it has it's charm... but it's way too "Linnell-by-numbers" for me.
