Talk:1985 Promotional Demo Tape

From This Might Be A Wiki

so, wait... Was Andy Warhol a Giants fan? Or did John and John record over someting of his? Jade

  • as far as I've heard, Warhol was a pack rat and kept everything ever given to him. Either John and John handed him a tape, or if someone from Warhol's camp brought it to him is unknown. I'd bank on the latter. Did Warhol ever listen to it? That is even more unknown. All we know is that this was discovered when someone was going over Warhol's huge collection of stuff. rad jose

The one time I found this online, shortly after it's discovery, there was only 6 songs. My version omits tracks 2 & 3. Anyone else remember it being like that? rad jose

i think it is exceedingly likely that tape 8 is tape 5. the tracklisting is the same, and it's not like they didn't frequently have different artwork for the same content. i propose folding them into a single entry. --ant 20:29, 21 January 2022 (EST)

Definitely seems like that would be the case. Would be happy to fold them both. --Mrsomebodyelse (talk) 20:42, 21 January 2022 (EST)

Mr. Me Tape[edit]

I'm not sold on the idea that there's a separate tape with Mr. Me on it. If anything, it could be a hidden/bonus track that slipped into the 1985 Demo Tape (like Famous Polka) or the third 1985 promotional demo tape, which the article also seems to refers to (mentions all four songs off that tape.) I'm open to discussion about it if there's anything else I'm missing. - Mrsomebodyelse (talk) 03:27, 10 September 2022 (EDT)

Mr Me wasnt released for another 3 years, the only way the reviewer would know it is if they saw it live or had a tape. The articles in the record reviews section, not live shows. The reviewer def had the main 85 demo & maybe the flexi, and coz they mention Rhythm Section & quote the lyrics verbatim, I think they probably had that recording as well (which was only on promo tapes). The lines are blurred with these tapes, I don't think theyre as defined/strict as this page maybe makes them out. As that Krauss quote says, theyre just assembled from what the band had on hand. Theres probably a bunch we dont know about, and the article mentions they had several. It's not hard to imagine this magazine, which regularly reviewed indie demo tapes, was given a promotional tape that happened to have Rhythm Section & Mr Me. No way to prove if its a new tape or a variation of one we know, I think its worth the current little mention on the page. --Batwho (talk) 08:27, 10 September 2022 (EDT)
Yeah, I see where you're coming from now. To me it seems plausible that Mr. Me could've been an extra song that slipped into the '85 Demo Tape since it's mentioned in a paragraph directly referring to the "self titled album." Could also be a part of that 10-song cassette that was mentioned in a poster one time. - Mrsomebodyelse (talk) 08:48, 10 September 2022 (EDT)
