This show was part of the rock festival Surfstock 3, hosted by WHTG. It took place on Ortley Beach in New Jersey, with the stage facing the ocean. The festival was MC'd by Joan Jett. Other performers included Soul Coughing, The Connells, Solution A.D., Marry Me Jane, Little John, Everlounge, Pete Droge & the Sinners, Love In Reverse and John Easdale.
The festival asked performers to play acoustic sets, so the band worked up a special acoustic arrangement of their regular show. None of the other bands at the festival played acoustic sets and John Flansburgh was reportedly furious. They Might Be Giants played Surfstock two years later.
