Trivia/Info
- John Linnell would recall the creation of this song in an interview with KMSU for the 2024 They Might Be Playing They Might Be Giants marathon:
John [Flansburgh] and I decided to put together a half-sized big band for a show in New York in Brooklyn at [Prospect Park], and I wrote the song "Museum Of Idiots" specifically for that group. That was really fun because I was just thinking specifically, "How does this work with this ensemble?" It was kind of arranged as it was being written.
- The stanza "Chop me up into pieces [...] Every piece will say 'I love you'" is remarkably similar to dialogue from the movie The Cross and the Switchblade. The movie was later adapted into a comic book with the relevant quote on the cover.
- The song has been performed as early as the year 2000, 4 years prior to being released on The Spine. This earliest arrangement differs from the album's recording; it is set in the key of F major (3 steps higher from the album version), along with some slightly different guitar and horn leads, and drum rhythms. Examples of this are a recording featured on TMBG Unlimited and a bootlegged recording at a performance in Brooklyn in 2000. Since 2003, the band has since been performing in the album's original key in D major.
