The It's Fun to Steal LP Sampler is a 1997 self-released promotional cassette featuring material from Mono Puff's second album, It's Fun To Steal.

Description[edit]

The tape was assembled by the band's management, The Hornblow Group, in June 1997, almost a year ahead of the final album's release. It was created as an internal promotional tool to secure a distribution deal with record companies and was not intended to be heard by the public. Although its existence had been known to fans since 1997, a copy did not surface until 2025.

The sampler is notable for including a demo version of "Backstabbing Liar", which has not been officially released. Three other tracks ("Creepy", "It's Fun To Steal" and "Dashiki Lover") were also unreleased at the time; the rest of the material had previously appeared on the EPs The Devil Went Down To Newport (Totally Rocking), The Hal Cragin Years and The Steve Calhoon Years. The tape also features an alternate track listing, slightly different song titles, and omits the songs "Taste The Bass" and "Extra Krispy". One known copy of the cassette bears the album's working title, Imaginary Friend, along with an even earlier 10-song version of the track listing, both blacked out.

Aside from "Backstabbing Liar", the differences between the material on this sampler and the final album are minor:

  • The opening note of "Creepy" is two seconds longer.
  • "Poison Flowers" includes a very quiet accidental guitar note at the start, also heard on The Steve Calhoon Years EP.
  • A short crossfade connects the end of "Mr. Hughes Says" and the beginning of "Backstabbing Liar".
  • "Dedicated" includes an extra repetition of the "Not only but especially for the ladies, Mono Puff!" sample at the start and features a hard edit that cuts off the coda, also heard on The Hal Cragin Years EP.
  • "Dashiki Lover" features one additional cymbal hit during the intro and a short extra bass fill leading into the coda.
  • A short crossfade connects the end of "I Just Found Out What Everybody Knows" and the beginning of "Pretty Fly".
  • "Pretty Fly" opens with a few seconds of ambient sounds, also heard on The Devil Went Down to Newport 7" single.
