Trivia/Info

  • This early demo version of "Backstabbing Liar" has not been officially released and is available exclusively on the It's Fun To Steal LP Sampler, a 1997 internal promotional cassette. Compared to the final release, the demo features slightly different lyrics and an alternate arrangement, with a prominent electric organ part. John Flansburgh wrote of the track in a 2026 Tumblr post:
The recording [...] is actually the demo, made with me programming the drums and keys. Not sure how this got into the world, and not sure why I took the demo so far (it's so complete!) So to my ears, in some ways the simplicity/clarity of my programmed drums, along with those backgrounds, makes the demo very "pop" sounding, while the final version is all live instruments and kind of tougher which might have been the vibe of the moment. Man, the demo has got so many ideas in it! I… I hate to say this but I kind of like it more! What a blast from the past.
  • While a 30-second excerpt of this track had been circulating online since the late 1990s, the complete recording did not surface publicly until 2025.
  • The inclusion of this demo on the sampler is unusual, as the final version of the song had already been released on The Steve Calhoon Years EP by the time the tape was compiled. This might suggest that it was included on the tape unintentionally.
  • Live performances "Backstabbing Liar" in September and October 1997 follow this demo arrangement, notably featuring Joe McGinty on keyboards. The band debuted the song's final arrangement live in February 1998.
