It only dawned on me today as I was having an argument with an anti-masker on Flansburgh's Instagram just how ironic this song is. I used this song as a defence when someone told me that "only the cowardice wear masks" and I sang the opening line, likening it that Flansburgh himself sang that.
I believe this song is essentially an extended ironic "oh no! whatever will I do?" and believe me, if this song was written after 2020, I would 100% liken it back to COVID-19, especially with the lyric "It's a miracle I dare breathe". --You&Me!! (talk)
