Trivia/Info
- This rough mix of the final album version heard on Flood contains a shorter bridge section performed on a synthesizer instead of the piano heard on the album. There is also less instrumentation, such as the absence of horns in the song's ending.
- Another difference that can be heard in this mix is the spoken-word sound of "Honk honk" before the lyrics begin, which would be replaced by the door buzzer heard in the final mix. When asked on Tumblr in 2022 about why this sound was replaced, John Flansburgh said[1]:
Like a lot of carefree and perhaps indefensible ideas, the honk sound probably didn’t seem like it would hold up to repeated listening, which is an idea we always try to keep in the back of our minds − kind of the difference between hearing a song in a theatrical or comic way and creating a recording that can be enjoyed again and again with no big obstacles to listen past.
