Trivia/Info
- This demo of "Don't Let's Start" evolved majorly over the song's first demo, featuring a majority of the final album's version's instrumental arrangement and lyrics. However, this demo still remains incomplete, with a few differences that stand out compared to the final album recording:
- John Linnell's vocal take is looser, and features adlibbed vocal interjections, such as the "wooo" that closes out the demo. "You are the cat inside the phone" is also sung instead of "You are the cat, you are the phone."
- There is a different synthesized bass that is used on this demo, as well as a Yamaha RX11/15 drum track that is missing sounds.
- The instrumental for this demo is notably lacking the Casio CZ-101 keyboard track[1], which appears on the final album recording.
- It is unknown when or where this demo was recorded. John Flansburgh has mentioned that "Don't Let's Start" was one of the last songs recorded for They Might Be Giants[2], implying that this demo may have been recorded during the album's final sessions. Given that the demo appeared on the Dial-A-Song master tapes[3], however, it may have been a home recording that the band had created before moving to Dubway Studios to finish the album[4].
