Mr Tuck's thoughts
In the mid part of the career Flans has started writing songs that really revolve around his voice. Allowing him to sing in a rather sickly pretty pretty voice the downside is there really is no interesting musical backing. The bike as a deity seems forced. Another Flans filler. I wonder if Linnell minds. (mr Tuck) 05:22, May 27, 2005
- Filler? I disagree. This is one of my favorite tracks on the album! (GFM) 10:31, June 2, 2006
- Yeah, Dirt Bike is certainly not filler. A brilliantly constructed Flansburgh song, possibly him at (or near) his best. -CapitalQ ♫ talk ♪ 09:42, 2 Jun 2006 (CDT)
- I also agree. The song is beautiful. I always get chills listening to this song. I think the only filler on John Henry is "opinion filler"...some songs on the album work for others while others don't. This song works for me. :) - Overjoy 12:24, August 17, 2006

Ratings
This is interesting... on 4-12-08 at 9:05 am, this song is the step above its (other thing) counterpart in the ratings list. I think it's fascinating mostly because the "other thing" version is much better, and should be a step above the john henry version. Mr. 77 09:09, April 12, 2008

Horn arrangement?
It's kind of bizarre, but I am looking to play the horn parts on a Stylophone, and I'm looking for some reference. Is there any known horn arrangement written down? --Ashurbanipal 00:39, March 26, 2009
Religion, Supernatural
Should this song be on Religion, Supernatural? I know he said it was about a cult on Good Morning America, but he also said that thing about the fictitious rock band. It shouldn't be on there if we're not sure which time he was truthful. Unless the rock band is the cult… -- DidgeGuy (आ ज) 22:20, 12 May 2010
- I think it belongs there. Flans has been known to contradict himself about some meanings of songs, but this could go either way. --MisterMe (talk) 14:20, 2 June 2017 (EDT)
Whirlpool
Isn't this song borrowing heavily from Whirlpool? The horn intro is very similar - surely no coincidence, given their chronological proximity. I'm surprised this isn't mentioned in either article. -- HappyDog (talk) 19:17, 28 April 2017 (EDT)
- That is probably just speculation, unless we can dig up some old interview where Flans makes the connection...or if someone wants to ask him on Tumblr (with no guarantee of a response, heh). --MisterMe (talk) 14:20, 2 June 2017 (EDT)
- Well, it's clearly pretty much the same chord structure and horn arrangement, and would have been recorded at around the same time. It is impossible for them not to be in some way connected, but I acknowledge that it would be speculation to pick one of them as the 'original'. --HappyDog (talk) 18:20, 24 March 2018 (EDT)
