Linnell Having Fun[edit]

They Might Be Giants have always written their own jingles and unlike some songs on the album, Linnell sounding like he's having fun here. Very Beatles/Wings with the vocal intro, the video which complements the song shows Linnell doing something that (knowing him as the introvert as we do) he dreads: CD booklet signings. Keen old Flans has already done all his signings and having left it, Linnell's now ploughing through his share, and the song gently pokes fun at the idea of such promotion (and indirectly) at Flans uber positive enthusiasm. The video show us the unglamorous setting of his front room and there is something strangely bizarre about watching a man in his mid 50s signing CD covers for his middle aged fans. What is the point of it all? The joke of course, is it makes no difference. The Giants are never having a hit as big as Flood again, and yet, they're still going for it like it was 1990. I presume Linnell did the signing duties with a bit more enthusiasm 25 years ago. Still Linnell recognises that the bed's been made and it needs lying in. Of the "promotion"types songs, this is quite fun. Though, it probably won't stand up to repeat listens. Sadly it's better than some of the stuff actually appearing on the album... Glad I wasn't the only one who immediately though Beatles in the intro!--Pittsburghmuggle (talk) 05:10, 9 April 2015 (EDT)

<3[edit]

This song is so much fun. I love that John is such an amazing songwriter that he can take some silly throwaway thing and still make it so great. The "working on some complicated personal issues" bit is my favourite part because it reminds us that his songs have to be so dark that he can't write even something silly without bringing something messed up into it, haha. And I could gush about how gorgeous he looks in his glasses in the video, but I suppose this isn't really the place for that.
