Talk:Rowboat Mayor

Delightful![edit]

This song is a pure delight and I think it should please any longtime fan who's looking for more material in TMBG's early experimental vein. It's also catchy as heck! --MisterMe (talk) 08:03, 28 February 2018 (EST)

Agreed! I've been trying to live by the spirit of Dial-a-Song and I've been listening to the new songs over the phone line before checking the higher-quality versions on Youtube. My immediate thought listening to today's was that it sounded like the old bootleg recordings that float around from the early Dial-a-Song days. I think it's the slight reverb/delay effect on Flans' vocals? Definitely captures that classic TMBG Dial-a-Song sound. --Mosesofthecows (talk) 20:07, 28 February 2018 (EST)
Hear hear! And it's got a trick I love hearing from Flansburgh's bag - a herky-jerky chop-and-gap rhythm under the verses, similar to the verses of Absolutely Bill's Mood. --Nehushtan (talk) 02:45, 2 September 2019 (EDT)
I heard this on the DAS phone line today. I was reminded just how much I really like this song, especially in the tinnier quality that phone lines somehow still have even in 2021. God bless these guys! --MisterMe (talk) 14:34, 31 March 2021 (EDT)

Instruments[edit]

Any chance that a real cello was used for Rowboat Mayor? After a few listens I gave up on a real banjo. --Nehushtan (talk) 00:51, 13 September 2019 (EDT)

The Cap'm's Fratboy Days?[edit]

I like sometimes imagining links between various TMBG songs, especially on different albums/collections. I like relating this song to The Cap'm. Someone who obviously thinks big things about themselves but is probably really small time and honestly a bit annoying. But from a certain outside perspective, that's great! I can see this song setting the stage for The Young Cap'm maybe at a party, red solo cups everywhere as he tries to impress people like he's a Big Deal, but everyone knows he's just a chump like everyone else!
