Trivia/Info

  • This version is close in arrangement to a demo released in 1985, but the bridge is slightly different.
  • Multiple mid-1980s live performances of "Rhythm Section Want Ad", including this one, has a band intros segment during the bridge, introducing various fake members of TMBG's then-nonexistent backup band. Fake members include "Funky Del Pueblo", "Frankie", "Mr. Bubbles", and the real Bill Krauss. Another 1985 performance includes "Jabbaboy". "Mr. Bubbles" is the nickname of a real-life person that is pictured here. The real name of the man is unknown but he could have possibly been given the nickname from a band he worked in that performed at Darinka.[1] In a 2026 Tumblr post, John Flansburgh commented on this live segment[2]:
I believe that section we left that section wide open to improvise over live (like the middle section of Hideaway Folk Family, Ana Ng, etc.) and it evolved. Seems very possible that Mr. Bubbles was a performer at Darinka (either on the same bill or just locally notorious) and I gave him a shout out.
