Interpretations:Wu-Tang

Inspiration, Lost in Translation[edit]

Perhaps this song is about that feeling you are doing something brilliant all your own, but you know something totally unrelated inspired it in a weird indirect way. It doesn't show in the final product, so you could just say you came up with everything, but you know that influence was there, however twisted away from its original context and nature it became. This song sounds nothing like Wu-Tang Clan, and yet...something about listening to one of their CDs must have inspired John Linnell of They Might Be Giants to sing "Wu-Tang" with such passion. I get it. Me too, John. Wu-Tang Forever. Zovi (talk) 00:19, 10 February 2026 (EST)

-I couldn't have put it better. EXACTLY how I feel about this song. I get it too. Wu-Tang Forever. --Elilupe (talk) 14:46, 15 February 2026 (EST)

Accidental Plagiarism[edit]

I feel like anyone who’s ever made anything can relate to coming up with a really cool idea only to find it’s been done before. This is especially apparent with music because even if one hears a melody once on the radio it can stick, even when forgetting the source entirely. A songwriter might accidentally pull this melody from their subconscious not knowing they stole it and this song is about a writer feeling guilty about that. Paranoia[edit]

This song is classic Linnell in the way that it talks about paranoia. The main character seems to believe they aren't responsible for this song on a CD that everyone seems enjoy. It reminds me of "The Greatest" from I Like Fun in the way that the MC maybe has imposter syndrome. "Listen to the sound on the CD, If you don’t believe me, Check it and see for yourself" Shows how he thinks the song doesn't sound like something he would write and he thinks he stole it from Wu-Tang (as proven by the lyric "At the end of my tether, Thought I was a goner, But in walked the answer, In the persons of Wu-Tang") Also the harmonies in this song remind me of "Montana" from State Songs Zagreus sits (talk) 11:54, 11 February 2026 (EST)

Larceny[edit]

This may be a long shot but the 'was it larceny' verse seems to me to be inspired by the episode of the Wu-tang TV series where the RZA shoplifts a drum machine, then plays his beats for the shop assistant later as a mea culpa. Now, it has been years since I watched the series so it's entirely possible that I am misremembering or entirely making up this scene, but it was the first thing I thought of when I heard it. --153.92.40.20 16:38, 11 February 2026 (EST)
