Sun shines bright on a hot summer day. Roller coasters await. See the sideshow at Steeplechase Park. Test your strength, guess your weight - Steeplechase Park is a now-defunct amusement park in Coney Island located in the southernmost point in Brooklyn in New York City. It closed in 1964 to expand Astroland's property, until it's demise in 2008 where Luna Park, as of 2010, currently takes over. It is a very nice day in the summer that roller coasters are waiting for guests to ride on. The sideshow could be referring to a circus or just a performance that is being held there. The lyric "Test your strength, guess you weight" refers to the "High striker" game, which is better known as "Strength tester" or a strongman game, which is just simply played by using a hammer or mallet to hit as hard as guests could to ring the bell.

Take a ride on a skywriting plane, loop-de-loop for a while - Skywriting was art pilots on biplanes occasionally do for fun as well performing stunts, such as the "loop-de-loop".
When we're done writing words in the sky, we'll land in Idlewild - The speaker's destination is Idlewild Airport. NOTE: The song is really about nostalgia of someone who has spent their fun day in New York City.
Idlewild, Idlewild, Idlewild, Idlewild - Idlewild was the name of an airport which is now John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) since 1963. It is located in Jamaica, in borough of Queens, just on the borderlines of Howard Beach and the Rockaways. The airport was renamed by the joint venture, The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ).
