The x factor is generated by an effect called 'formant shifting.' The formant might be technically defined a different way, but it seems to me to be essentially timbre or resonance. If you shift it a lot it suggests a female or bass voice. The effect is also complex—currently it seems it can’t really be done in real time so there must be an awful lot of 0s and 1s getting crunched—and the glitchy quality can be exciting. Kind of like the Terminator’s silver face slipping off...
