Talk:I Made A Mess
Simple but cute
I feel the same way about this song that I did about "I Am Invisible"--the lyrics are so simple, which sometimes is a major problem for me (e.g. a lot of the Disney stuff), but in this case I think it's all right for some reason. I thought it was cute and complemented the music well, and I know it's certainly an experience I can relate to! (Also I thought the image of John working really hard at cleaning stuff up was really cute, but that's probably just me.) --Self Called Nowhere (talk) 20:23, 25 August 2015 (EDT)
A Mess Indeed.
A lot of kids music, that you see on TV, is designed to be listened to once (as backing music for a visual) and then evaporating leaving no trace that it ever existed. When the Giants began with child centric music, the hook was that they were going to try and write kids music that could hold up to repeat listens. Largely they've succeeded, some of the best material is rivalling the best of the mature work. However, this is a very weak song no matter how old you are. Sounding as if Linnell was literally improvising it on the spot, the irritating stop/start of the song and a vocal where Linnell (yet again) appears to be struggling, quickly fails in what it's designed to do: entertain children. Tantalisingly the melody right at the very end of the song is very pretty. Robin Goldwassser (and that girl can sing) sounds wonderful as ever on back up. Linnell would have been advised to have junked the rest of the song, and started with this fragment to make a better song. Again, one wonders where the critical voice for the band is. If Selfcallednowhere, one of the most generous posters on this site, deems a Linnell tune as "all right" you know it must be weak. Linnell continues his pretty dreadful 2015 with yet another clunker.(Mr Tuck)
- I like that you get so upset when people say things to you about your reviews and then you're going to start getting bitchy based on mine. I said I liked this song. The "all right" was not "not too bad," it was "normally this is something I don't really like but in this case I did." Is "one of the most generous posters" supposed to be an insult? Yes, you're right, I'm really terrible for actually liking the music of a band I spend time hanging around on the wiki of. I find it's a good idea to enjoy things I devote time to, and avoid things I hate, something you apparently do not agree with. --Self Called Nowhere (talk) 00:05, 3 September 2015 (EDT)
- While I didn't interpret your words to be a personal attack against Self Called Nowhere, I think she's brought up a very good point about avoiding things she hates. I thought you said you were doing away with these negative weekly reviews a while ago, Mr. Tuck. Seriously, why are you still listening? Are you posting in the hopes the Johns will see it, realize how much they've wronged us with the horrible songs they've been releasing, fire their band, and release Birdhouse II? I'm not asking this to insult you; I'm really wondering what your goal is here. The way I see it TMBG hardly deserves to be run through the wringer as if they were all over the radio and you couldn't help but be subjected to them. It's obvious the general population doesn't like what they do, and I think over and over now we have established why. I'll be very interested in what you have to say when any new opinions happen for you but I don't understand how you can remain entranced by something so perpetually disappointing. -- Sonderling (talk) 04:07, 3 September 2015 (EDT)
- I know this is super old, but I definitely agree, put these reviews on youtube or something, we're all trying to have civil discussions. Now I understand you have mellowed out, but I feel like youtube or a podcast would be a better format for ripping apart our favorite band. I do feel bad for you when everyone thought you wanted things to go back to Bill Krauss, when that is not what you said or meant, I honestly have a soft spot in my heart for a few select Tuck reviews but most of these ruin the song for me for like, 10 seconds. --⇂⇂↋ suᴉɥsuǝZ ʎɯɯᴉᒋ (talk) 10:22, 27 October 2021
We’re all trying to have civil discussions...unless anyone disagrees? I’m never uncivil. I just review the songs as I find them. (Mr Tuck)
A+++
I'm normally a big fan of their kids music but this is the first seemingly aimed-at-kids song they've released this year that I've really liked, I think. I like the sounding-made-up factor and I really like the vocals and melody. It was instantly catchy for me. The only thing I don't like is the end! Funny how that works.
