They Might Be Giants
— with Stuart Sherman opening —
4D in New York, NY
September 20, 1986
Fan Recaps and Comments:
4D was a short-lived performance art space that had opened four days prior to this show. It was run by the former creative directors of the nightclub 8BC. This was the second (and final) They Might Be Giants show at the venue, after a gig there the previous day.
The venue's opening was detailed in an article by Cynthia Carr in the September 30, 1986 issue of The Village Voice. The article, titled "4D: Hyperperformance", made brief mention of this show:
[...] Because who can hack a $15 to $20 door charge on top of that cab fare?
Not an audience looking for performance art. This seemed clear when I returned to 4D last Saturday, although that wacky musical duo, They Might Be Giants, went over quite well with songs like "Put Your Hand Inside the Puppet Head." Some glossy well-dressed young women who apparently had never seen the like kept yelling, "They must be giants!" and "You're gonna make it!" But Stuart Sherman's subtler piece about Crime and Punishment was barely audible, between the rude yuppies talking behind me and the throbbing disco beat coming from downstairs. Here was the scenario implied by the decor: when worlds collide.
