Interpretation 1

The theme to Meridian is in the category of venue songs that are actually more clearly about the city in which the band played than the venue. The Meridian itself is a conventional rock club, located across the street from Minute Maid Park -- the baseball venue that replaced the Astrodome as home of the Houston Astros. The intervening street is, in fact, I-45 which does have a large exit ramp at that intersection. Geckos are a pestilence in Houston and a frequent topic of conversation for visitors because they attach themselves to doorways and make daring leaps into the foyers of houses and hotel rooms. Another topic is the Texas drawl. You get used to it. The truth, of course, is that native Texans often comment on the incoherence of New Yorkers. The heat you do not get used to. I recall the July afternoon of the Meridian concert as being particularly searing. As for sleeping in the Astrodome, well, you have to contend with the rats. The sad irony, of course, is that a little over a year after the concert displaced New Orlineans did sleep in the Astrodome. May it be the last time. --Sydney C. (April 7, 2006)

Actually, it's closer to the Toyota Center. I was at Minute Maid Park almost two weeks ago and actually looked for the Meridian as I was walking back to my car. It takes up a whole block so four different things can be considered to be across the street from it: a sports bar, an apartment complex, and I think a couple of public parking lots. — User:ACupOfCoffee@ 12:16, 21 Jun 2006 (MDT)
The intervening highway is actually Highway 59 (not an interstate), although 45 is nearby. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 173.11.246.129 (talk) 17:49, January 14, 2011

Katrina

Not really an interpretation, but it's very odd that just a year after this song was released, people actually did have to sleep in the Astrodome as a result of Hurricane Katrina. --MisterMe (talk) 16:33, 11 September 2023 (EDT)
